I can't remember what it was called, it may well have been. It was on in the afternoon for a bit, and had that chap from Hollyoaks in it, Ben someone or another... let me have a google...

I like the idea of Jack having that easy charm, i wonder whether he'll be Irish or British in this... if he's Irish then oh wow... thud times a thousand!

Edited to Add: After a quick google it turns out that 'Crime Stories' was the ITV thing i was alluding to.

We can finally stop playing detective & leave that to Damien.

How brilliant is this! I'm beyond excited that hes been cast as a lead too! Sounds as though hes had some input into his character and lines and stuff this time too which must have been absolutely amazing for him! xxx

http://www.tvwise.co.uk/2013/11/damien-molony-fay-ripley-clare-hope-ashitey-cast-in-channel-5s-drama-series-suspects/

It sounds really exciting.....and early next year!  It's not long ago that we though we'd have to wait that long for Ripper Street!

It's great news that Damien has been cast in this. His new character sounds intriguing and i'm thinking Jack will be slightly beardie/ have a bit o' scruff going on thud

(Now...reading the article, it suggests that a lot of the script is improvised and that it's filmed documentary style. Earlier in the year ITV did a similar series with an improvised script and filmed documentary style and it was not well received, the whole format that is. I'm hoping with Faye and Damien on board then it will be better. Of course we won't know until we see it but i had a very slight reservation when i read that about 'Suspect's'. It has Damien in it, it will be good, it will be (i hope) intriguing....*shutting up now* )

But yay...new project for Damien, Being Human, Ripper Street and now Suspects. Ripper Street concludes it's run the week before Christmas so it's great that we will have new material to look forward to in the New Year (whenever Suspects is shown)

Ruby you're not the only one with reservations about the style of the programme. Have to admit I did think that the documentary/improv style could be a bit of a worry but 10 episode of Damien in a lead role is enough to make me reserve judgement until we see it.

I've done a little detective work of my own by following cast tweets & I think were looking at a February air date.

Even better, that means we won't have too long to wait between the end of Ripper Street and the beginning of Suspects.

I will reserve judgement until we've seen it, it was just my initial reaction upon reading about it. I did watch a bit of the ITV show and it was odd, hard to get your head around. I am fully prepared and expect to be proved wrong. And i love crime shows so again, right up my street.

Ruby - please don't tell me that the ITV series was Crime Stories.....because that had the same executive producer!  Although that could also mean that they've had a trial run, and learned some lessons....

Putting aside the filming techniques...improvisation does depend very much on the talent of the actors - and I do rather like the sound of this:

"Damien Molony (Being Human, Ripper Street) will play D.S. Jack Weston, whose easy charm belies his killer gut instinct.  Jack is a man of action – coupled with acute emotional intelligence."  (insidemediatrack.com)

So....ok, yes - reserving judgement, but with a hefty dose of optimism...

(I'm also rather liking seeing Being Human and Ripper Street listed as credits!!)

DAMIEN MOLONY JOINS LEAD CAST IN CHANNEL 5 CRIME DRAMA ‘SUSPECTS’

New TV Role for Damien Molony

Damien Molony, Suspects

Currently appearing in BBC Ripper Street, Damien Molony has been cast in 10 part crime procedural ‘Suspects’, an original drama from Channel 5 formerly called ‘Evidence’.

The series centres around 3 main characters:

Detective Sergeant Jack Weston played by Damien, described as “a man of action” with “acute emotional intelligence” whose “easy charm belies his killer gut instinct”

Detective Inspector Martha Bellamy “Witty and warm” leader of the police team played by Fay Ripley (Cold Feet), and

Detective Constable Charlotte ‘Charlie’ Steele a “passionate yet level-headed” detective played by Claire-Hope Ashitey (Top Boy).

‘Suspects’ is a departure from other crime dramas, using fly-on-the-wall documentary style filming techniques with the actors improvising much of their own dialogue and being directly involved in the creative process. Each episode will involve a different case, following the investigation from the committing of the crime to it’s conclusion.

The original Channel 5 drama is co-created by Paul Marquess, produced by Newman Street (part of FremantleMedia UK) and debuts early 2014.

3. The actors improvise some of the dialogue
4. The filming techniques are fresh and new.
5. Confirmed to debut early next year

This is all very good and exciting news. I'm intrigued by the improvisation aspects as it can work with the right cast and direction - Outnumbered is part-improv and is generally well-received. Either way, scruffy emotionally intelligent DaMo will be a sight to see...

The improvisation element is possibly what excites me the most about this project - a rare thing for an actor to have that much creative control! not only will we see Damien act, we will see him create!

halyes

I've seen shows/movies done documentary style, it could go either way.  I have no expectations coming into this one.

I'm most intrigued/worried by the improvisation part.  Improvisation can be exciting & brilliant, it depends on if the actor is good at/comfortable with it.  That Damien took on a role that is defined by it shows me that he is willing to take risks and grow in his acting.

Improvisation also depends on how they all play off each other.  I don't know anything about the other actors.  Interesting it's two females to one male on the leads...

I can't wait to see this.  Looking forward to it more than Christmas!

So we've been woo'ed by Hal, intrigued by Flight's secrets, and now we'll be charmed by Jack.... thud (here's hoping we get to see just how charming Jack is!!!!)

This certainly is exciting although I wish it wasn't Paul Marquess! He made The Bill into a soap!

Goodness!

I'm just plum baffled by the idea of an improvised drama. All the examples of scripted with improvised dialogue are comedies - Curb Your Enthusiasm, everything by Christopher Guest. I'm happy to be intrigued and I'll guess we'll see how it works out. If I get a chance, I'll check out this Crime Stories.
