I love this interview with an incalculable passion.  15 wonderful minutes of hearing his lovely voice and fantastic insights into the show, into the process they went through to prepare.  Love hearing how he felt about the format, that nervous excitement, how charged up he sounds about it. and I'm quite loving Clare as well.

LOL about the on-site filming, especially the power of being able to control the tube ingress. I can just picture him smiling about it. (with those dimples *sigh*)

Interesting that he said they most definitely will not have a romantic liaison or such.  He is right, it would have been the easy thing to do.  But this show is determined to concentrate on the cases, not the personal lives of the detectives.  darn.  (There is still hope he'll spill some curry on himself and have to go change in the locker rooms though, yeah? wink) I am looking forward to the little tidbits we will get.  I felt we gleaned a lot about Jack already.  He was so affected by the case in Ep 1 he resorted to smoking, though he'd quit.  That contained emotion when questioning Laurie; Jack knowing he was being filmed, you could see he probably wanted to blow up in those scenes but contained it to just slamming papers and doors.  I really want to see what he's going to do that has Martha pull him aside to tell him his emotions get in the way and when in one of the promos we see her chewing him out in her office.

I never knew that about police stations - that they have a "soft" room (at least in the UK)  Some of the things they did/didn't do in the show seemed un-policeman like procedure to a few commenters - I didn't  have a problem with most of it - but hearing how much time the actors spent with real police, both on and off duty, and Damien's hope that it's a realistic representation, makes me believe that they weren't off mark after all.  The things we're used to seeing in most cop shows might be what's actually off...

I've listened to this 3 times and could listen another dozen more.  I just feel I gleaned so much from it.  And have so much to say.

Agreeing with everyone, this interview is a real treasure, a re listener over and over for all the cool insights into the show.

For me the standout part is damien talking about the fleeting moments of character ..... As I was writing my review for this episode I was struggling to word just that very thing.

It is also well worth checking out Fay Ripleys interview by the same guy

The Fay Ripley interview is really worth a listen, it goes over some of the same ground...but she gives a different point of view - I love that she says one reason she took the job is because Damien and Claire were both already involved.  Also quite interesting that she said all of her jokes were cut out - Lord Toby said at the BFI something about comedy not being a seperate thing - that it is always present...even in the darkest circumstances, and I think it could've done with a bit, tbh.  It would've made them seem more real....

The character development thing is interesting.  They have presumably all developed their own character's backstory even though that is not going to play out....and they were given some space to just 'be' those characters - I hope that in future episodes we get to see a little more of that.  (I'm genuinely shocked that the 'attraction' thing came up between Jack and Charlie - is it not possible for two characters to ever just be collegues or have platonic relationships on tv?!!!)  I appreciate that this is supposed to be a documentary series about the job...but even a real documentary would give the viewers the opportunity to get to know the personalities a bit - it helps to engage the audience in the story!

I say this to almost every interview (except the post BH ones...so sad!!) but Damien always sounds so enthusiastic about his work.  He really does love his research, doesn't he?!  And he's obviously making a conscious decisions to try to vary the type of jobs he's taking on.  Which is absolutley fine by me!  Obviously I was already a big fan of BH before I'd even heard of Damien - and Ripper Street is totally my kind of drama.....but I would probably never have watched this - I got bored of 'cop shows' a long time ago because they have become so formulaic..a bit predictable - and I love that this is different.

....so much more to say...!

I am going to stop listening to this now....maybe!...so I will stop drivelling - but I'm quietly amused that Damien's aspirations for power amount to being allowed through the barrier on the underground without a valid ticket!

That's the kind of down-to-earth guy he is! However, having had to pay £1700 for my Annual travelcard last year, it's the kind of power I would like as well!

The thing I like about Fay's interview is the further clarification on the imrov element. Suspects is not like crime stories where the outcome is not known by the actors and it becomes as she says like a game show (I msut admit i was not clear on this fact until this interview). Damien and the others do know the case outcome and all the plot elements, and plan it all out before shooting and there is a policeperson present, for checking lines purposes! so in that sense it is a drama, not a documentary.

Good point about the humour fifi..... Toby said even in thh direct of corcumstanes there is humour in real life. But i guess some of these cases are very sensitive isues, maybe they weighed up the possible backlash to that.

Clare and Damien mentioned development of character..so i still think we will get an increasing sense of them all....and character arcs that extend across the series even if each crime story is a descrete unit in each episode.

I'd wondered whether they knew the outcome too.  But it makes total sense that they should, or it wouldn't be improvised drama...it would be - as you say - a game show.

I guess that if it was a genuine documentary it would be edited according to it's focus.  If it's not a documentary about a team of detectives, but is about how they follow a trail of clues to solve a case - then the personalities of the detectives are unimportant.  But as it is a drama, and doesn't have the advantage of actually being real, I'm not sure how sustainable it would be as a series without being able to engage to some degree with the main protagonists (and I think you need to share an occasional smile to fully engage with a character too! - although I agree that Fay did suggest that - for the 1st ep at least - some of her jokes may have been a little....inappropriate)

I agree to an extent fifi, but I was really surprised how i did find myself engaging with them! Not sure how... for Jack it was as Damien mentioned the fleeting moments of character.. the way he lost it at Laurie, his perceptivity with Toby, the cigarette moment. I need to see more to really know how far that can go though.

I guess what i mean is, to engage with a character via their work persona is, so far, more powerful than i realsied it would be.

It is a fab interview hey Su I just re listened to the audio, that written interview is not complete, but covers most of it!
The audio must be of the press roundtable, where many were in attendance, so lots of the same interview will probably follow

Just listened to this audio interview with Damien and Clare again... 6 weeks for 10 episodes is intense filming!

With series 2 coming in Autumn, I've been wondering about when the extra filming for series 2 will begin, at that pace they will polish it off in a couple of days! action

Been thinking about this recently.  With the DVD still set to release mid-Nov saying 10 episodes (I'm wondering if that will change to either 5 episodes or become a S1/S2 set) And S2 coming out "Autumn", I'm guessing they will start filming late August/ Septemberish, film the last few S2 Eps, and continue with filming all the S3 episodes. That way as the next 5 episodes that were already taped air October-ish, it will give them time to post process the additional episodes, and gives them time to release the DVD just after the S2 ends.

Does that make any sense?

I've been thinking much the same, whimsy.  The fact that the DVD is still being advertised with 10 eps is a bit odd -  it'll have to be s1 and 2 combined, but if they are filming extra eps for s2, then I wonder how many eps there will be?  But I would imagine that they will film s3 at the same time.  The intesiveness (?!) of the filming means that it'll still be a fairly short process.
