SQUEEEEEEEE!!!!!  This is the only film Georgia King is currently filming, according to IMDB, so it's all but confirmed!  Now we have to play the "which character is he" game.

I'm downloading the ebook from the library right now.  Quite excited, though I guess I should temper that with the fact that it's probably a minor role.  Still, A FILM!!!

It has Nick Hoult and Tom Riley and Jim Piddock, 3 names I recognize from movies over here.  That to me says this will be a big, international movie... that we can see at the theater over here across the pond...

Regarding Boyzone, they were around in the 90s, the time of Britpop! Another clue?

If the rumours of thE other castings are true it would be cool to see Damien in scenes with both Adam and Joseph Mawle!

maybe Pearl..though Boyzone are probably as far from Britpop as you can get, it was bands like Oasis and Blur, more related to Indie than pop. This makes me wonder about hairstyles and costumes!

For those only reading this topic this morning.. This is not an April Fool's joke! (although it would have been a good/funny/potentially cruel one)

97, which is when the film is set, is past the big Blur/Oasis rivalry and looks to me like it's more about the decline of Britpop than it's rise, but I haven't read the book so I can't be 100%.

I found on the Variety website that it's a really short filming period - only 5 weeks - so it'll be done and dusted by the middle of April, leaving him potentially free for RS in May; Joseph Mawle would have the same filming problem as well...

It is yay that he'll be in the cinema, albeit in a British 'cult' film (I think it's going to fall into the 'Layer Cake', 'Lock, Stock' kind of category), but less yay that it's gonna cost me a fortune to go and see it! My local cinema is £12 a pop now!!

Must admit I bought the book a week or so ago....it was on my list of books I've never read, and the previous speculation prompted me to buy it.  I've not had much chance to read it yet....only about half way through February, but fully intend to waste the rest of today with it!

Oh...and yaay!!!!

I know that Boyzone weren't "Britpop" themselves - not even British! But they were current at the same time. That was my reckoning about the tweet - or is since this news.

You're right Kat it's set in the late 90's, I used Blur and Oasis as an example of what the term Britpop refers to as opposed to Boyzone.
Its a satire, so it is going to be shedding a dark light on the industry.

The film has an AMAZING cast already, some fab names attached, even if they are cameo roles i can imagine this one is goig to be a British cult classic! It brings to mind Svengali, whcih i have just seen, starring Michael Socha, also about the music industry but in a smaller way.

Yay about the book fifi, let us know if you recommend it.. and have any ideas about characters Damien could play.

Here is the Variety piece:

"LONDON — Satirical comedy “Kill Your Friends,” about the era of Britpop music, has started lensing in London for a five-week shoot.

Pic is set in London in 1997, when the British music industry is on a winning streak. A&R man Steven Stelfox is slashing and burning his way through the biz. Fuelled by greed, ambition and drugs, he lives the dream, as he searches for the next hit. But as the hits dry up and the industry begins to change, he takes the concept of “killer tunes” to a murderous new level.

Screenplay is penned by John Niven, based on his cult novel. Pic is the feature debut for director Owen Harris, whose previous credits include TV series “Misfits.”"

The book doesn't so much as focus in the music but on the industry itself & how these guys lived lavish drug & drink fueled lifestyles whilst guessing their way through the job.
The book is brilliant! For obvious reason I have started to re-read it & had forgotten just how dark, crude & funny it is.
I can definitely see the film being in the same mold as Layer Cake, Lock Stock.... I'm imagine something like American Psycho crossed with Filth.
Role wise, most of the main role already have actors attached per IMDb, but there are many supporting roles that could fit. I'm thinking A&R guys Schneider or Hastings could suit.

As it is a book/film about the music industry, do you think it might have set piece music or additional songs in it? Damien has tweeted about a song!

"American psycho crossed with filth" approved Becca - this gets my vote!

To those who have read the book.. if Damien was filming a scene on the dancefloor.. are there parts of the book that would fit?

Maybe Pearl! but Damien often tweets about music and if it was a newish band and song, unlikely it would be in a film set in 1997

Sounds great!!
I don't know the book (yet), but let's hope he's not the first character to be killed (from the title I guess some people might die) :O
But maybe we see some more dancing and singing?
