NEW INTERVIEW: DAMIEN MOLONY ON 'CLEAN BREAK'

Damien's first 'Clean Break' interview, with TheJournal.ie

“It’s exciting and scary”: Meet one of the stars of new RTÉ drama Clean Break

The 31-year-old actor chats to us about his latest role.

MOVE OVER LOVE/Hate – there’s a new scary late-night drama about criminals in town.

RTÉ’s forthcoming four-parter Clean Break comes from the same stable as Love/Hate, but looks to tackle an altogether different kind of crime.

The Sunday night show, written by Wexford playwright Billy Roche, is about a tiger kidnapping gone wrong, and the impact it has on the local community.

Set in Wexford, the cast includes Adam Fergus, Aidan McArdle, Simone Kirby, Damien Molony, Kelly Thornton and Ned Dennehy.

Exciting and scary

“It’s a very, very exciting story and it’s very scary – certainly the first episode,” Molony (above) tells TheJournal.ie.

Though based in London for the past seven years, Molony – who has also starred in Ripper St and Being Human – was tempted back to Ireland again when he discovered that Roche was at the helm of the script.

“He is without a doubt one of the greatest Irish playwrights ever,” says Molony. Meanwhile, Gillies MacKinnon and Damien O’Donnell are “two amazing directors that I’ve wanted to work with for a long, long time”.

This is Molony’s first drama for RTÉ, but because he’s based in the UK he’s not familiar with Love/Hate (which stars a number of his friends) – though he plans to borrow a friend’s boxset. “I can’t wait to finally sit down and watch it,” he says.

“My access to RTÉ is through the RTÉ Player,” he adds. “It’s so exciting coming back [to Ireland] because it’s not the same old stuff churned out year after year [on RTÉ]. It’s exciting Irish talent. They’re constantly challenging themselves. That’s only a good thing for Irish drama.”

Can he tell us about his character, Danny Quinn? “I think he’s a good guy thrown into the wrong circumstances,” says Molony.

It’s a story of survival for my character Danny – he just makes the wrong decisions. He probably doesn’t have any real guidance. And the wrong decisions at the wrong time lead him into hot water.

His character knows “everything is going wrong” but can’t do anything to fix it.

“I love playing very troubled, tormented characters who have a huge amount at stake and have to make a tough decision and are constantly wanting to care for people but are being forced to do things against their will,” he says.

Molony has just finished doing a play in the National Theatre, and has a new comedy on E4 starting on Monday.

I just love working – I just want to keep that happening. I love being challenged by new projects and directors. I love working with very exciting storytellers because they make the best stories.

Clean Break will debut this autumn on RTÉ One.

Thank you for posting interview, doesn't sound like Damien will play any romantic leads in the near future.... But good news that the channel has produced boxsets in the past....

The first Damien interview of 2015 I believe! YIPEEEE!

Danny doesn't have any real guidance and makes the wrong decisions at the wrong time. Sounds rather like Albert Flight !

Great interview ! I love reading about Damien's thoughts about his work. And we know how much he loves challenging characters and we love him for that.

I believe it is the first this year domino....apart from the brief clip from the rte drama panel.

That's funny rosie...  because I thought “I love playing very troubled, tormented characters....." sounds just like Hal!

One thing that always strikes me about Damien's interviews is the sense of how much he loves what he does......and I love that!

Awww bless him, he sounds do excited. And once again he has to borrow DVD's to catch up (he'd never watched BH before he starred in it)

Fabulous read.  I'm so excited for this show now. Danny does sound like Flight AND Hal. And quite frankly that makes me quite happy! He does tormented so well.  (He's going to be another character I'll want to cuddle again won't he?)

Yes indeed, as we've all said many times before, conflicted and angsty, multi-layered characters are DaMo's forte. It is so good to hear (read) him saying the same thing, but better!

YES domino it truly is! It made me happy when he says that likes to play troubled/tormented characters... like Hal, Flight and now Danny! just like you said domino, it's DaMo's forte.

It's also wonderful to read that Damien loves his work so much (which means he's never going to stop, right?wink

And I agree with you Whimsy, he's definitely going to be another character you just want to cuddle and take care!biggrin

I liked how they used pic of BH interview in this article, made me smile (even I miss BH) to realize that when there's always talk about Damien they will bring up his role in BH too.

This interview has made me a lot more excited about Clean Break ! It sounds gritty and you have to love a troubled, tormented Damien character. He does play those sorts of characters so well. And Danny definitely sounds like he will need a cuddle !

or will it be maybe want to cuddle Danny at times, roll your eyes at him at others? If he truly is conflicted and in the same vein as Hal and Flight will he just be a victim in the true sense of the word? Or will he also be the architect of his own fate..and possibly the fate of others?

His comments about the characters he loves to play make me curious to meet Paddy in Tiger Raid too. (Had a few dreams about him and we haven't even met yet!)
We have so much to look forward to! Clean Break might just break my heart. But then, most of Damien's characters do that, so why shouldn't Danny Quinn?

I think it might be a heart breaker too TJ. Wonder what tough decision he is going to have to make? It sound like his heart might get broken by that decision too.

I'm wondering whether Danny has a love interest... or unrequited love or some kind of relatonship tragedy?

Domino, I have wondered that since the pilot. I can see him having a bachleor oad. but at the same time, i can see him having a very lonely life.

There has been no pilot for Clean Break Glofigs. But yes, from what Damien is saying about Danny in this interview, loneliness seems inevitable... or at least, aloneness.

If there is a love interest I'm sure it will be quite a troubled angsty relationship
