Damien will star as Giovanni in a  radio production of Tis Pity She's A Whore

 9-11pm 7 January 2018 for Drama on 3!

Compassionate and disturbing, John Ford's great story of doomed love returns in a new visceral production for radio, intercut with music by Jimmy Hendrix and Nick Cave.

Sounds amazing and the second major radio play our fave actor will be starring in, in the new year!

As many of you know this is not the first time Damien has played Giovanni in the highly controversial John Ford play, The West Yorkshire Playhouse's production was his first major theatre outing in 2011. More info on that here.

Damien's  radio productions can be listened to live and on demand via the bbc iplayer radio, online and in app, and have always previously been available internationally, Rights permitting this will be too!

What a wonderful New Year treat to look forward to!

Our fave actor starring as the male lead in not one, but two substantial radio plays

Tis Pity She's a Whore Sunday 7 January and The Effect Sunday 14 January!

 

This is a brilliant way of bringing a play to a far wider audience, BBC radio has a greater accessibility both in terms of those unable to access theatres or cinema due to health or disability and in terms of geolocation. It may not be live theatre, but heck it is going to be an incredible audience experience. I'm very grateful for Damien's radio projects and this 2 hour radio interpretation of this classic play is taking them to a whole new level!

He reprised his role of Edmund in King Lear this year, and now will be reprising his role of Giovanni In Tis a Pity.  Crossing fingers for a Hal revival. wink

The fact that it is two hours long makes me very happy! Intercut with music from Jimmy Hendrix and Nick Cave sounds cool and also I'm intrigued at which points in the play and which songs!

Lol Rosie, it will be hard not to have those images in our minds of Damien in Tis Pity! The beauty of radio though is for your imagination to be taken into another world and have new images painted in your mind, I'm looking forward to that.

Whimsy, your comment made me think about listening to Hal on the radio! That would have to be Radio 4 though surely! Which then made me wonder what accent Giovanni will have. The lead actress playing Annabella, Jesse Buckley, also Irish, so maybe this will be in their natural accents?

I confess I didn't recognise her name but I just looked up Jessie Buckley because I did watch War and Peace so thought there was a chance I'd know her if I saw her - and indeed I did. She was very good in W&P so hopefully she'll love doing radio drama and take to it brilliantly alongside DaMo!

Jessie Buckley stars in her first radio appearance as Annabella. Credits include War and Peace for BBC One, The Last Post - BBC One and Taboo.
She played Anne Egermann in the West End revival of Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music. Buckley played the part of Emily Strong in Rosamunde Pilcher's four-part TV adaptation of her book Shades of Love. 
She appeared opposite Jude Law in Michael Grandage's West End production of Henry V at the Noël Coward Theatre, and played Perdita in the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company's production of The Winter's Tale.

 

 

Perhaps Damien in the lead male role is not mentioned because he is now a well loved, well known and seasoned radio actor!

Just re read my last post what I mean is, it's quite strange that as the male lead Damien is not given a special mention too. But as this is Jessie Buckley's first radio production maybe it is more understandable, as an intro to her.

Well this is excellent news.....and to think that until a couple of weeks ago I didn't even know that radio 3 did drama!!  And it sounds like it's going to be a pretty exciting production too.

I've always said that from Damien's previous work, how much i would love to have seen him play Edmund in King Lear, and Giovanni in Tis Pity.....this year I saw him as Edmund, and now this! Amazing!!

And what a start to the year....

Yes indeed and only a fortnight away! For those many of us who missed out on Damien as Edmund this year, this a wonderful treat - far more accessible to all. Hurrah!

Did anyone else notice that Jessie Buckley is also in the BBC radio 3 production of The Effect, alongside Damien, both in the lead roles again? :how cool!

I read that Jessie sang a song herself. Unfortunately, it is not there that Damien did that too. biggrin

However, I find it a bit strange too, that Damien is not mentioned and Jessie is presented with some details.

And they have changed the duration. In the photo above is 1:30 and now it is 1:45 ..confuse

Just 4 days until Tis Pity She's A Whore...

that's nearly 2 whole hours of DaMo in the lead role in a substantial play!

 

I've also had confirmation from Drama on 3 both this play and The Effect will be available live and 30 days after broadcast, WORLDWIDE!

Just 3 days until Damien in Tis Pity She's A Whore!

Who is tuning in?

How wonderful we can all listen together. I am hoping as it is a late transmission in the UK, and on a weekend, that those in time zones many hours behind us can tune in live. Friends in Europe who are ahead, this will be a real bed time treat!
