Since his first donation, Damien has also continued to actively raises awareness of the importance of blood donation and has motivated to his Twitter followers to 'save a life give blood' by 'ReTweet'ing post-donation photos sent to him. He appeared on the front cover of Blood Donor Magazine in 2013, where he revealed in an exclusive interview that his own inspiration for beginning to give blood was a personal one. Blood Donor Magazine 2013 cover
When I was filming the first series of Being Human someone very close to me died. David had cancer and was losing a lot of blood. To keep him alive while he was receiving treatment, he needed two pints of blood a day. I was genuinely amazed that people who had never met David were keeping him alive with their donated blood."

I know it can seem scary at first and I don’t like needles either, but it really couldn’t be easier."

I am very grateful to my followers on Twitter who have given blood or have started giving blood since I started tweeting about it. I made the obvious connection with playing a vampire in Being Human, a blood addict giving blood. So now I have a deal with my followers: I will re-tweet everyone that has donated blood and tweets me a photo."

Unfortunately i'm unable to donate blood either. I have stage three chronic kidney disease - reflux nephropathy to give it its proper name. I've had it since birth and it's congenital, ie born with it. I also take medication for cholesterol, vitamin D absorption and iron. My daughter's life was saved by an anonymous blood donor as she was delivered 12 weeks prematurely 11 and a half years ago and we would have lost her for sure if not for a blood transfusion. So i have the greatest of respect and admiration for those who do donate because someone like you saved my precious daughter's life. My sister is a long term donor, I think she donated her 24th or her 26th pint a little while ago.

I used to be needle phobic until i was diagnosed with my CKD (only diagnosed three and a half years ago but have had it since childhood, it doesn't affect me unless my kidneys are put under strain, ie pregnancy) but now no more. If i were able to donate blood then i would, quite happily.

I have given blood for a number of years now. It is really is a quick and relatively painless thing to do that can save the lives of many others.

I have only managed to donate 8 pints over aroud a 6 year period due to illness & medication changes but the NHS Give Blood team have always been very helpful in letting me know when I can & can't donate and are always extremely grateful when I can.

Coincidently I gave my 8th pint 3 days after Damien first donated & despite not tweeting my picture to him until he asked if there were any other donors out there a couple of weeks ago (a bit of a moany tweet about missing a RT from him I might add! - lol) he still retweeted it :)

Just to prove how easy it is I've attached a picture of the morning after donation - I bruise like a peach and there is barely a mark. So if Damien has inspired, and you are able do something amazing and give blood.

oh my goodness... thank you for sharing your stories Kayla, Kath and Lisa...fully in empathy with not being able to give blood. But inspired and grateful to those who do. Lisa your story and that of your daughter's is so moving, there are no words! having direct experience of being on the receiving end of donation puts you in a better position than anyone to speak passionately about the issue. And is a direct example of why it is so important for high profile peeps like Damien to raise awareness about blood donation.thank you for sharing.

thank you for sharing your blood donation experiences Sami and Becca, I already have your retweet pics that Damien posted may I quote you?

I'm another one of those that can't donate. I have ITP which is an autoimmune disorder and means my blood doesn't clot properly. I actually had the scare of a lifetime when my son was born and my platelet count got so low I thought I was going to have to get a transfusion. Luckily it's never been that bad again and for now everything seems to be under control. Still... cuts and unnecessary needlesticks are a bad idea for people like me lol It really makes me happy that Damien has influenced so many to donate and help save lives. It's truly an amazing gift for those in need :)

Hi Lilli, I am so sorry to hear about your scare when your son was born, thank goodness you came through that and you are ok now (((hug)))

I apologise if this topic is bringing up painful stuff for people, I would never want anyone to feel they have to share about themselves, just because the topic is here. grouphug

Thanks Domino! Don't worry I never share unless I'm 100% ok with it. I hate reading that so many of us have gone through so much though! Thank you and hugs to those who have shared experiences and trusted us enough to let us get to know you better :)

See this is why i like this forum. No-one is afraid to share their experiances or battles through life good or bad.
I'd love to be able to donate and have respect to those who do, as they're helping save lives. Also to those who can't and would love to because of circumstance.
