Lol! well hopefully you will have seen my tweets tonight about the stage door adventures jennster ! exciting!

Damien once again took the time tonight to come to the stage door and meet with fans and pose for photos, what a gentleman, when he must be kind of exhausted after the 2 performances today. From what i can gather so far, he came out and chatted to everyone..and I will let the others tell their stories about it if they want to share! (hopefully they will! with piccies!)

Ok then heres my extra long account of saturday night!

I left the train station from my home town at 1pm and it was one train straight into Paddington. The 2 ½ hour journey flew by and i was really excited! I was meeting up with fifi at Paddington and we found each other pretty easily then had a little chat whilst we waited for Becca, laura, cat and gemma to meet us. They arrived at around 4pm and we all made our way onto a second train to get to our hotel. A short walk from the station to the hotel and we met up with shoe and lisa and checked in. Got changed, and finally headed off to make our way to the theatre.

We discovered that there was a football match about to start in London and so the trains were an absolute nightmare. We were meant to meet everyone by 5:30 but hadn’t even boarded a train by this point so we tweeted our orders to some who were already there. Eventually, after being forced to separate our group to fit on the trains and fifi getting her head trapped in the doors we arrived at the theatre! We headed straight in and made our way to the restaurant.

We joined all the other bloggy folks who were sat at our reserved table. I took my seat and started chatting to everyone when mikey said he was shocked i could hold conversation when Damien was in the same room. I had no idea what he meant and at my confused look pointed out the Damien was stood right in front of me a couple of meters away! He looked to be chatting to a couple of fans and was signing autographs and having pictures. He was there for around 10 mins but didn’t look over or anything before disappearing.

We had our food and then went in for the play. Our seats were great. I was sat right in the middle of the stools in front of the stage and had a brilliant view. We know that Damien had 3 scenes, the first was brief but we got a little flash of the abs during a bit of stretching that happened! The second scene was brilliant. Damiens character was a horrible racist bully, but Damien put so much emotion into it. You could the passion that comes across in being human up close and it was truly amazing. This was also the scene that Damien used a cockney accent and it was really good i thought! I did wonder if he would be able to pull it off especially switching from his natural irish in the first scene but it was great, really convincing. His 3rd scene was the longest. In this one he was a protestor and had a girlfriend. There was a lot of technical buisnussy jargen in this bit and to be honest i didn’t understand a lot of it but there were some funny bits too. It was a really good play and a couple of scenes gave me goosebumps. Particularly a scene with danny Kendrick and another actor, when he threw his hat and made a really passionate speech i was stunned and had goosebumps, it was amazing.

Once the play had finished the cast all bowed and we all clapped...then they went off and came back for an en core and that was it, i couldn’t hold it any more i whooped as loud as my throat would allow and i heard a few others which i assume would be brookesey!!!! Lol J

So then it was time to make our way to the stage door. We went straight out and the door is really easy to find its just at the side of the building. It wasn’t long before Damien came out. The one thing i was really hoping for was that he would recognise and say hello to me and my wish was granted, he said hi to everyone and then spotted me and said oh hi su! YaY! Lol. There were general hellos and thank yous and then the gift giving began. Louise lead with the teasmade. I was leaning on a heater thing so i suggested he lean on it to open it. He struggled a bit so i asked if he just wanted me to tell him what it was and he said yeh. I told him it was the teasmade that he had wanted from the being human set. He was SO excited! Really amazed that we has got it! So much so that he swore a lot!

Next came the T shirt which said “Keep calm and love the being human bloggers” and he said you know it!

Then was whimsys blanket. He said “Look at that gorgeous bastard” and held it up, it was amazing! I told him we had all been amazed at it and he said yeh its fucking amazing (literally every other word was a swear word)

Then shoe gave him the coffee, he was absolutely stunned! He said something like “omg this stuff is so expensive it would cost like £800 to go over and get some, wow i cant believe it”

Finally present giving was over. Then laura said oh su you have a gift don’t you! I wasn’t sure whether to give him the magazine or not but laura gave it to me so i just thrust it at him and said heres that magazine thing i did. He held up the brown envelope and said “Oh yeh Su Hemming superstar!” which can be seen in shoes video from earlier....embarrasing.

Then we started getting autographs. I went into organised mode and started lining people up so we could all get our programmes signed. People had individual little chats with him and i don’t know what was said. A couple of people got piccies but then damo said he needed to go because his family were waiting for him. I could see he was about to leave and becca and i wanted to get our 3some pic so i jumped in quick and asked! Then becca got in and everyone cheered! It was really funny and damo looked really smug!! Haha. He went back in after this so we all started making our way to the bar. Damien was stood at the bottom of the stairs so i said thanks again as we went past and he said thank you su.

Once we got drinks there was nowhere to sit so we just stood around chatting. Then Damien came down and sat at a table with his family. We were there until last orders and Damien was there too. We left him to it obviously and just sat enjoying our drinks and having a good time. Then as we were finishing off our lat drinks Damien came over to chat to us. He said he had just wanted to thank us for supporting him throughout being human and said yes he was obviously sad it was finishing but that it would absolutely be going out with a bang. I said thanks to him for taking the time to talk to me all of the times i had seen him on location and he said he loved seeing us there and it was a pleasure to speak to us. He also said that danny ohara had directed the last episode and that theyd had meetings about what he wanted from the episode. I asked if he had been given suggestions and direction on what he should do and how to act and he said yeh hes incredible.

Laura had a quick chat with Damien and then i asked him if we could get a quick group pic with him since we hadn’t had time at the stage door. He said yes and as we stood up i noticed that his family had gone and he had now been sat with a group of his mates. He said they would now be taking the piss out of him all evening bless him! I sneaked into poll position and grabbed a hold for the picture. It came out brilliant J Once we were to let go i said thank you again and said he had seriously made my year and it had been a pleasure to meet him, he said thanks and then asked hows the tat! I showed him and he said that really is incredible! Another set of thank yous came before he said goodbye and wandered off to the bathroom. We finished off our drinks and left him to it! And that was it! The molony madness had ended! After that we ended of buying some alcohol from an off licence and going back to the hotel to talk about our evening into the wee hours of Sunday. It was an absolutely brilliant night with fabulous people and ill never forget it!

Su, thank you for sharing! I'm surprised you remember so much (i can barely remember anything of what he said to me in Newcastle, apart from being a little worried at the BH fans reception, being pleased he was so accepted, thanked me for me telling him i loved the Not a Man of God Speech and wishing me a happy birthday)

It just goes to show was a lovely man he is. Such charm and so level headed too.

Had a fabulous time meeting Laura and Matty, had a gorgeous meal at the theatre cafe, thoroughly enjoyed the frightening play, then I missed the last ten, fifteen minutes because as lovely as the food was, something went terribly wrong and I literally ran from the auditorium where kindly usherettes directed me to the nearest loo! I got out in time for the considerate usherettes to turn the telly on for me so I could catch the last couple of minutes, due to the no re-admittance policy. But I was able to get back in for the after show panel which was most illuminating, if perhaps the teeniest bit smug (I agree with their smugness and still found them so!). But feeling gassy, (due the creme anglaise, perhaps?) I felt it best to miss meeting Damien and Toby. Post extreme gastronomical experience, I just wasn't up to it.

I'd love to see the play again. There's a lot to take in, more than the sum of its parts. For anyone interested, I'd like to recommend The House I Live In, a US documentary about how the main aim of the war on drugs seems to be to provide prisoners to the increasingly privatised prison system, and I'm currently reading Neil Barofsky's Bailout, yet another book about the financial crisis, yet again highlighting who the real criminals are.

Oh yeah, the cast were great by the way! Nearly impossible to single anyone out, but I'll make an exception for Damien.

I apologise in advance for the following rambles and long winded stories. So here goes...my report from 5th March.

It was a long day – only had a couple of hours sleep but worth it. I got to London at 4 pm so had a few hours to spare. I headed to Forbidden Planet in search of a gift for Damien. Following Domino’s advice I was on the hunt for Spielberg / Indiana Jones items. I found 3 different books of interest and decided on the Handbook - http://forbiddenplanet.com/34784-indiana-jones-handbook-hardcover/

With time to spare I headed to Leicester Square. I’d discovered that morning before setting off that ‘Welcome to the Punch’ a new British thriller I’ve been raving about since seeing it on Sunday at the BFI, was having a gala screening at the Vue Cinema. So I joined the small gang of autograph hunters by the cinema door to see who would arrive. I was lucky enough to meet / see lots of great British actors including Johnny Harris, Daniel Mays, Jason Flemyng, Mark Strong, Peter Mullan and the awesome James McAvoy!

After that diversion back on the tube to head to the Royal Court to meet up with Laura and Jane. (Sorry again for being late). I’m sure you’ll hear their comments on here too. Got food and Laura said Toby plus lots of the other Being Human production team where already here. Then spotted the lovely Kate Bracken arriving to join the gang. After eating discovered I’d left my jumper in the toilets and found it had been handed in and nicely folded up for me to collect from the cloak room! Lovely staff at the theatre.

Got a programme and squeezed myself into my row C balcony seat. It was high up but had a good view looking down onto the stage. Despite not being very knowledgeable about current affairs, politics, government issues etc I still really enjoyed the play. It reminded me of the themes and staging used for ‘The Conquest of the South Pole’. I think I was most impressed by the onstage costume and set changes. The timing to the music, sound effects, lighting was perfect and very effective. During the first costume change by Damien from workman to Jason I had a good view looking down onto him dressing behind the clothes rail. I thought Damien was great in all 3 of the roles but thought Ray was the best as that character was on stage the longest. Plus the character had the best ‘look’. I was particularly excited to see Damien ‘cleaning’ the stage during this scene as it reminded me of Hal and my own OCD traits.

Once the performance was over everyone that stayed for the Q&A was allowed to move seats to the stalls downstairs. It began with the writer, director before they were joined by 5 members of the cast including Damien. He looked great in a black top and scruffy, messy hair. Damien was relatively quiet during the Q&A – he looked around the audience a lot to spot faces he recognised and there was banter with fellow cast mates on stage. He joined in during discussion of the background research they did beforehand. He gave at least two answers to questions posed where he was charming, witty, intelligent and passionate. Hopefully Laura can fill you in more on the detail but he discussed the situation in Ireland and characters he played etc. As the last batch of questions was posed they decided for everyone on stage to give a ‘one sentence’ response to their preferred question. Damien perked up to say ‘start from the other end of the stage’. He was last on the line stage right so would have been first to speak but wanted to be last, so they started from the other side instead!? This was a cheeky moment from him! As the Q&A ended I spotted Damien give Laura / Jane near the front a friendly wink as he left the stage!

A quick dash to the loo and out to the stage door. Met another BH fan (Sparkly or Sparkling Sonya I believe). We realised we’d missed Damien and headed down to the cafe / bar where he was already at the BH table. We found a table and sat to discuss the evening so far. We waited hoping Damien would come over as we didn’t want to interrupt as there was a big gathering of friends. Then another BH fan suddenly appeared and went straight up to Damien who welcomed him in a calm, friendly manner so Sonya and I took our cue to go up as well. I said sorry for interrupting his night but he was more than pleased to speak with us. Sonya got a photo first then I chatted to him. He was even more charming and relaxed than last time. I joked that he must be getting sick of seeing Laura here all time but he said he’d be worried if she wasn’t there every night. (Something along those lines I believe) He remembered my name was Matt which was amazing. He signed my copy of TV & Satellite week plus wrote a lovely message in my programme. Laura then took a photo of me with Damien. It took three attempts as we needed the flash to go off, as it was a dark area but Damien was very patient and relaxed. I said I was jealous of how cool his messy hair looks and he made kind comments about mine. We checked I hadn’t blinked in the photo as I told him that happened last time. He remembered that I’d been to Andrews play after Travelling Light last year which was really nice. I asked him which his favourite of the three characters was – he said Jason as it was so different from anything he’s ever done before. I said it was very intense in such a short scene – works brilliantly. I said i thought the scene changes were brilliantly done. He said he has some time off to go back to Ireland and no projects planned. I mentioned the idea of touring the play in Ireland in reference to comments in the Q&A – he agreed it would be a good idea.

I realised I hadn’t given him his present yet so passed on the Indiana Jones book. I said it was a suggestion from Domino. He said the films were one of his favourites when younger and that he wanted to catch up on the Young Indy TV series. I said I’d met Sean Patrick Flannery (Young Indy) at a convention who was a great guy. He seemed impressed. We shook hands, he thanked us for coming and he kindly took my magazine back to the table to get Kate to sign later.

We returned to our table. I saw him showing the Indy book to friends and much amusement as he passed the magazine on to Kate to sign. A bit later he brought the magazine over to our table and I said to pass on my thanks to Kate again for me.

Then time to head home..a few photos outside the theatre. Then back on the tube to Paddington and home. A great evening and I’ll add more information when it comes back to me.

Thanks for reading folks...

Lovely to see you Matty, at long last (and UJ too). Like me, UJ's passion for theatre has been awaken and we were talking about going to the theatre together again.
The two questions that Damien answered on stage were about his favourite character. He liked Jason best. He knew people would be horrified, by him, but he felt Jason was a complex character. He said that everyone had a goodness within themselves, even people like Jason, and he wanted to explore that.
He was saying that the speech Ray gives about Ireland is true. in 2007 before he went to Uni he worked in a newsagent in Dublin. Things were so bad that for a Assistant Manager's job in Londis 500 people applied for it and there was a queue outside the shop. A customer in his newsagent said that unemployment must be bad if there was a Irishman working behind the till.
Also, someone asked if they had any training/preperation for the play and we heard Damien say, following demos in the rush hour and laughing.

Damien had told me on Saturday that Toby Whitehouse and Sarah Dollard would be coming to the show. He said if you're in the bar, keep a look out. He said that he would introduce me to them. But I arrived early and saw Toby sitting down (just as well, as Damien forgot to introduce me to the gang later as it was too busy). I said hello, introduced myself (and said "Damien told me you were coming today"). I said I wanted to thank him for writing Being Human and I had loved it all and he was really pleased. I have already seen Episode 6 (for work) so he really brightend up and asked me what I thought. He then introduced me to Sarah Dollard and Polly , the producer and Daniel, the director. They were lovely & I even got a big hug from Polly when I said Thank you for making Being Human. We talked about Episode 5 & 6 and Daniel wanted to know what I thought about the final ever scene. They are dying to know what fans will think of the last episode. I felt confident to tell them what I didn't like about it and they all laughed and said it was a good answer and they liked it.
Sarah is a real fan girl, and she admitted it. I told her she is a fab writer, and I was dying to see what she was doing next. Daniel is going to direct the next series (or some of the next series) of Silent Witness. We had a joke about that "trinity" too and how that has changed over the years.
I told them I had seen some filming and had seen a particular scene that had not been included. They told me (and Damien had said on Saturday too) that it was a special scene that would be on the DVD. They are planning lots of special DVD extras. I hope they do! They asked me how I knew Damien, so I told them I'd met him during Travelling Light. We were chatting away, then a big group of people, including Kate and Laura Cotton arrived. I needed to get my food too, so I said my hellos/goodbyes at that point. But they were a lovely group of people and I was so pleased I was able to tell Toby Whithouse that himself.

Sorry this is a bit late & rambling but what a Molony filled weekend I’ve enjoyed. Think I’ve just about recovered so will try to tell you what happened.

Su has basically covered the logistics of the weekend but needless to say the tube train we took to get us to the Royal Court theatre was ridiculously full. I have never been touched by so many different people at the same time!

Once we got to the theatre we rushed in & searched a packed bar for our table, in doing so I must have walked straight past Damien because when I sat down Su immediately said “Look who’s behind you” I am so observant!

I was sat next to Su in row G of the stalls Middle row, middle seat perfect view – well not quite I couldn’t see Damien getting changed at the side of stage when others could.

The first character we saw Damien play was a workman installing a meter into an old woman’s house. He used what I would say was a heavier irish accent than his natural one for this role, and whilst this scene was brief it was quite a touching scene as you could tell his character didn’t agree with what he was doing, but what could he do? Shallow remark – as Su pointed out we got a little flash of the abs as he stretched to fit the meter. I may have given a sharp intake of breath.

In his second scene Damien played a racist cockney. Quite an awful character but played with such conviction you could kind of see his point of view. The accent was generally good, bit of wobble mid way through but he recovered well & finished strong.

His final character, Ray, was an irish activist. This scene was a lengthier one and involved most of the cast but Ray was a central character to it.
The whole cast performed superbly throughout with some quite powerful scenes involving Lucian Msamati & Danny Kendrick. The play as a whole however missed the mark for me, it might have benefitted from being a little longer as the 75min run time flew by and the issues raised seemed a little rushed to me. I wanted more!

After the play came the show we’d all been waiting for & Mr M didn’t disappoint.
We all made our way to the stage door after the play finished and didn’t have to wait long until he came out to see us.
You have probably all seen Laura’s video by now but it’s safe to say he loved the gift’s we had taken him and seemed really relaxed and happy to chat to us all.
First up was the teasmaid that myself & Louise had found as a match to Hal’s that he had mentioned in the BH blog answers he would have liked to have kept.
I’d suggested we wrap the gifts in 1D themed paper as a bit of a mickey take and the others let him know this. “It’s Becca’s fault” said Louise as soon as Damien clocked the paper. He raised his eyebrows said “Ah Becca” & smirked at me – sarcasm is obvioucly expected of me by now. We made him open the teasmain, he joked that he didn’t want to spoil the 1D boys lovely faces but was blown away when he realised what we had gotten him – so shocked to the point of profanity which continued throughout – clearly comfortable with us all.

Next up was the t-shirt, in a 1D bag which again he loved! I’d packed it so he could see the logo (“If you don’t let us dream, we won’t let you sleep” Stage door free t-shirt collection 02/03/2013) on the back just from looking in the bag but he took it out anyway. Read it with a smile (I must have gauged his humour right) and said he would think of us everytime he wore it. I told him he would have no trouble remembering us and he should open it up and check the front (Keep Calm & love the Being Human Bloggers) as he read it he laughed and said “you know it”. Not sure if he saw the 1D Easter Egg I’d put in the bottom of the gift bag, but I have since tweeted that he needs to save it for Easter.

Up next was Whimsy’s amazing quilt & his beloved coffee. Once again he looked pretty blown away with the originality & thoughtfulness of our gifs.
After the gifts he said that he really appreciated us coming to see him & that he looked forward to having us in the audience as it made the atmosphere electric, different to a normal audience – does he mean were not normal?

We then had autographs & photos. Not sure what was said to individuals but to me it was along the lines of thanks for coming, really grateful that I came to see him. He remembered I had been in Wales in October when it was freezing & pissing down (when they were filming the ep5 bandstand scene between Hal & Alex) this surprised me as the only interaction we had that day was for him to shout that we were all mental for standing in the rain and then a brief chat before he left for the day.

We kept him outside in the cold for awhile & eventually he said that he had to go as his parents were inside waiting. At this point Su & I grabbed the chance for a quick threesome photo which raised a cheer from the rest and, which as you can tell from our pictures, raised a smile with Damien. He did say he was cold so we took the opportunity to move in close and keep him warm, it was the least we could do.

After he left we decided to head back into the Royal Court bar. On the way in I passed Damien on the stairs, he said hello again, I replied I promise were not following you, well maybe just a bit. He laughed & said see you later.

We spent much of the night actor spotting with lots of “Ooh, what his name’s over there” & “What’s he from? I recognise his face” going on.
At the end of the night there remained just us, Damien & his friend & family and the rest of the cast with friends left in the bar. Damien came over to our table & had a quick chat about Being Human before agreeing to have a group photo with us all. He said his mates would take the piss, and they probably would as they all watched us from there table.
Once the photo was taken we said our goodbyes to him, finished our drinks and wandered off into the London night in search of more alcohol.

All in all a brilliant night.

UJ I am so sorry to hear you became poorly during the performance! what a major bummer and very stressy too i would imagine, but glad you could watch the last couple of minutes on a monitor and caught the post show talk. the play was 'frightening'? you mean because it is so close to how thigns really are?

Matty, thank you for such an in-depth account! I for one really appreciate the sharing! It's just amazing how Damien always remembers the names of fans, is this the only time you have seen him since that time at the National stage door last year? wow!  I'm struck by how brave you were to approach him, not sure i could have done the same, amazing how gracious he always is to fans though and it sounds like he appreciated your questions and insights into things! (bet he liked the Indy book, sounds like he did!)

Interesing to hear that he enjoyed playing Jason the most of the 3 characters - well done you for asking - having read the script for the play I know what a challenging character he must be to portray. I agree with you about the play touring, not just ireland...but everywhere outside of london too, to get the message across to a wider audience....as a dystopia of sorts (although Lustgarten says it is not strictlyone as it is not really a stretch far from the truth) it is a mighty awareness raising tool..i guess there is the danger of preaching to the converted with a limited run and geography?

Wonder if Damien really does have no projects in the pipeline or if that is a red herring, we know he has another radio play coming up in May, but cannot wait to hear what he is up to next!

Laura and Uj...you were winked at? squeeeeeee!

Laura...thank you for sharing your account too, lovely to read about the Q&A. what was all that about Damien going last that Matty mentioned?

Interesting to hear Damiens perspective on Jason, he loves his complex characters.... fangs

And wow..you are so brave too! how absolutely wonderful that you met Lord Toby Whithouse and had a chance to thank him in person for BH, that has made me so very happy.. he deseves all the thanks in the world. You met Polly the producer and Daniel O'Hara one of the directors too? awesome! and Sarah Dollard! get you hob nobbing the BH glitterati!

Exciting to hear that there will be some epic extras on the dvd, that should keep us all going for a bit, after the end. *sniff*.

that's right i've only met damien once & he remembered me. i was glad in a way we missed him at the stage door as it was really nice to chat in the bar area..more relaxed environment once we began talking.

looking forward to hearing what he is up to next - he's bound to be in demand by casting directors!
