I'm not prepared to pay attention to any speculation or rumours - mainly because I have no idea who most of these people are!  I will wait until the BBC make an official press release.

I must admit, however, that I am starting to speculate over Steve Moffat's potential departure.  Both he and the BBC are strenously denying that he will leave...even to the point where they say that he is already signed up for 2014 - that's just what they were saying about Matt Smith a few weeks ago!  A new Doctor and new show runner could really be make or break for the show....omg, it would be unimaginably crap if Damien was to end up being the last Doctor!!! (sorry! - should I have kept that thought in my head?!)

The trouble with Dr Who is that the concept deserves a harder edge.  I used to love watching the Sarah Jane Adventures.....but it was kids tv, and I enjoyed it as such.  I forget that Dr Who is family viewing, and always has been - Tom Baker had K9 ffs!  Maybe I just wanted it to grow up with me.....  I often thought there were a lot of parallels between Dr Who and Being Human - a combination of humour and darkness being one of them.  But Dr Who just never quite gets there, and it will always fall a little short.  I don't want it to be a programme that 5 year olds can watch!  Torchwood tried to fill the gap - but was never as good as it deserved to be.  Then Being Human came along and did everything that Dr Who failed to do......from that point of view Damien as the next Doctor might be a bit of a headfuck!!

I realise that in all my rambling, a lot of which sounds surprisingly negative considering that Dr Who is one of my favourite tv programmes,  I have completely failed to mention one very important point. If this did happen - if Damien was actually cast as the twelfth Doctor - I might actually burst with joy and excitement. lol!

Torchwood was OK to start with, but only OK. It all went downhill when they killed off Ianto! He was one of the best characters in the show. They had already got rid of Tosh and Owen so all they were left with was Jack and Gwen! I think the writers wrote themselves into a corner and we finished up with the dreadful fourth series.

I couldn't get into Torchwood. Swearing and sex didn't make it adult. Adult behaviour, yes, but not adult storytelling. Doctor Who was more sophisticated. But people do keep urging me to watch Children of Earth. One day, maybe, if I ever get the chance.

I started with Children of Earth, but gave up quite quickly. Torchwood always seemed to me to be a case of 'we should do a spinoff', but never really properly thought about how the story could run post the first few episodes.

I read Rory Kinnear was cast? I'd love Damien to get the role but at the same time it would stop him from doing an awful lot of other things, he'd be locked away from us like Aidan was in the Hobbit !!! Xxx

Nothing's been confirmed, HalGal. We're still on tenterhooks.

As previously said, Rory has denied that he has the role.  And Ben Daniels has said more or less the same.   think the casting is still on-going.

You raise an interesting question HalGal...about Damien being locked into a role for years, I think i have aired my views on this too... it would be incredible for Damien to be the next doctor, but that is all he could be..for years! But it would also guarantee world fame and if he could avoid typecasting then any role could be his after that.

I also agree with you fifi about the nature of the show....very much enjoyed your ramble by the way (if only you could see my nodding) and the writing...well the last series was very hard for me to get into, with the exception of final episode which was insanely AWESOME both on a WHO level and world class TV... and up there with the best ever episodes of Doctor Who for me. But I do feel Damien can elevate any material so....

The audience is a different demographic and i felt the last series was very child centric..on the whole..

From a webmistress point of view I am not sure what it would mean for the sites...our small corner of the web may become swallowed up whole by the MASSIVE Doctor Who web machine that already exists out there..or we could expand like a wild thing...(or somewhere in between lol)

So.....irrespective of what happens...would we want Damo as The next Doctor.... or not?

Only if the quality of the show improves.

As for the level of exposure, anything that promotes him in the industry ain't gonna hurt. And I don't believe Tennant's been typecast. On the contrary, it's allowed him to stay employed in projects which he wants to do.

I think I've already demonstrated enough indecision on this question to excuse myself from answering!

I understand the dilemma: fame, fortune, pick of roles on one hand; loss of privacy, weight of expectation and (selfishly on my part) losing the 'intimacy' that us small band of followers have with him on the other.

I'm going to err, therefore, on No for the moment. Although I'll be chuffed for him if he does get it.

I would like to see him in the role but for the selfish reason that we'd get to see him on our screens for longer than six or eight episodes and that the publicity for Doctor Who is huge, it does not get ignored (unlike the final series of Being Human, thanks BBC Three) but i brought up the subject of the loss of privacy and his current (relatively) easy accessibility. I want him to be more successful than he is, we know he's talented, I want everyone else to see that too. I want to be able to see him on TV and think 'we saw that talent before anyone else did'.

But i'm not going to build my hopes up because if he doesn't get the role, I don't want to have to deal with the sharp disappointment. It's a tough one.

Agreed, I feel really strong About the privacy issue and we certainly would not be having any part in that here. But the downside of fame in this society right now seems to be this expectation of access to more and more info... Which is fine of it is about the work but outside of that however, he would be very well looked after by the BBC !

The rumour is that an announcement may happen either sometime next month or in August as filming for the Christmas special is due to commence September time. It's also gone very quiet on the Doctor Who front, no new names have been suggested in two or three weeks.

Yes, i read autumn time too Lisa.

It is probably going to be someone who had not even been mentioned in the rumours, I remember the same thing before Matt Smith's casting, he wasn't rumoured but they said he just walked in to the audition and they knew straight away. I bet Damien gives mindblowing 'Audition' though............. Wonder if he did?

Haaaaa!!!!

I want so much for him to get this part but i know that he won't...i suppose i'm just keep telling myself that so that i can deal with the disappointment (pessimistic? in this case yes because i don't always get what i want) but he has a lot of on line fandom support to get the role and he would be pretty perfect, known but not really known if you see what i mean, he has gravitas and he also has wit, he's young enough to keep the younger ones on board as well as keep the female population interested (yes, am that shallow...) and not alienate (if you pardon the unintentional pun) the male section. Chances are he won't be asked to audition, i can imagine should someone else be cast, that he will say, if asked that he didn't even audition) The media keep throwing out more famous names, every single time when since the show relaunched in 2005, all of the Doctor's were more or less just starting out in their careers, the producers and casting folk won't want someone who is well known in another role, ie Sherlock for example, and it's never who they think it will be. They never ever learn, or get a clue in that respect.

Forgive me if I'm posting something everyone's already seen and I'm late to the party (as usual).  Actually I wasn't really interested in this article for the sake of making a case for Damien as the next Dr, but I just saw this and loved the description of Damien's portrayal of Hal so much that I wanted to post it somewhere.

http://screenrant.com/doctor-who-season-8-twelfth-doctor-12-casting/

Damo's on the 3rd page...

"This casting choice has actually been mentioned in a few other places, but might not be obvious to those who haven't seen the UK version of Being Human, which Molony starred in for the last two seasons. Molony isn't yet a big-name actor, but there's a lot about him that just screams 'Doctor'. For starters, his best-known role to date is as a slightly out of touch, centuries-old creature with a tortured past and a rather quaint dress sense.

Molony has more than typecasting going for him, though. While his performance in Being Human is occasionally a little overly theatrical, his ability to switch from stammering, obsessive-compulsive neuroticism to haughty outrage and then to cold-hearted psychopathy, all within the same character and in the space of a single episode, is incredibly impressive, as is the unreserved way in which he throws himself into the role. Now that Being Human has come to an end, Molony is sure to move on to bigger things: could Doctor Who be one of them?"

I'm not sure where this person is getting "overly theatrical" (IMO the only time that's been the case is possibly when he does good Hal changing into bad Hal in the chair and deleted scene) but YES, YES, halyes to this part:

"his ability to switch from stammering, obsessive-compulsive neuroticism to haughty outrage and then to cold-hearted psychopathy, all within the same character and in the space of a single episode, is incredibly impressive, as is the unreserved way in which he throws himself into the role."

Reading that just made me all giddy inside.  That's all I wanted to say. wink

Awesome read whimsy, thanks for posting!

Agree with you wholeheartedly - "overly theatrical" is simply incorrect, Damien's performance is nuanced and many times he underplays hal, which adds to the kinetic intensity and atmospheric tension. that statement also makes the assumption that 'theatrical' is simply flamboyance when to be theatrical is actually something else entirely but that's just linguistics and I am just nit picking.

this is well said:

"his ability to switch from stammering, obsessive-compulsive neuroticism to haughty outrage and then to cold-hearted psychopathy, all within the same character and in the space of a single episode, is incredibly impressive"

We do have a Damo for the Doctor section of media and articles here so I will add this in that topic too, if that is ok!

Thanks whimsy - this is, indeed, a lovely read...

With the recent Ripper Street excitement, I'm feeling it's less and less likely that Damien will be cast as the 12th Doctor.  (I'm not entirely sure how likely I thought it was....you never can tell with these things.....)  I can't really see him being revealed as the next Dr Who at Christmas, and then shortly afterwards appearing in a number (?) of episodes of Ripper Street - regardless of how big, or small that part may be - and the coming back in the spring as Dr Who.  That would just be weird wouldn' it?  Or am I just being pessimistic......or optimistic, depending on where you stand!

Well it would depend on whether his role in Ripper Street is just for the second series or with prospects for more. Filming for Ripper Street apparently lasts til the end of next month and filming for Doctor Who (the Christmas special anyway) is supposed to begin in September so technically were he to be offered, unless he has something secret in the pipeline, then he would technically be available. Apparently Who filming and everything that goes with it is pretty full on and according to Matt, lasts ten months out of every twelve.

It's also not unusual for one actor to be all of a sudden all over the place and in everything, Olivia Colman comes to mind, she did Broadchurch, and then that Mr Whicher thing and she's on our TV this week too. So no, i don't think it's weird at all.

I feel Damien is going to become one of The BBC's boys... he is being groomed right now!

Not sure how accurate or significant but read on twitter Damien was at the Doctor Who Proms?
