Things that remind me of Hal Yorke, now and forever... (quotes, song lyrics, poems, etc)

The Ripper Street/Detective Flight flurry happening the last couple weeks, and the Damien appearances earlier in the month have helped fill the Hal void quite a bit, but then there are the quiet times when I start mourning/pining for Hal again. Sometimes I come across something that reminds me of Hal (or just how I feel about Hal).  Some things are obvious (I will never look at marigolds the same; I used to dislike Puttin on the Ritz, now it's on my playlist; playing with dominos has taken on a whole new meaning) but then there are random snippets I'll read, or lyrics I'll hear, and I immediately think Hal.

Today I just decided I wanted to share one.  smile

By hero, we tend to mean a heightened man who, more than other men, possesses qualities of courage, loyalty, resourcefulness, charisma, above all, selflessness. He is an example of right behavior; the sort of man who risks his life to protect his society's values, sacrificing his personal needs for those of the community... There is, of course, another sort of heightened man who bulks large in the popular imagination... He is not "loyal," not a model of right behavior. Quite the contrary, he fascinates because he undermines the expected order. He possesses the qualities of the "hero": skill, resourcefulness, courage, intelligence. But he is the opposite of selfless. He is hungry; "heightened," not as an example, but as a presence, a phenomenon of sheer energy...

Paul Zweig

In Chinese philosophy, the concept of yin-yang which is often called "yin and yang", is used to describe how seemingly opposite or contrary forces are interconnected and interdependent in the natural world; and, how they give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another. Many natural dualities (such as light and dark, high and low, hot and cold, fire and water, life and death, and so on) are thought of as physical manifestations of the yin-yang concept.

Yin and yang are actually complementary, not opposing, forces, interacting to form a whole greater than either separate part; in effect, a dynamic system. Everything has both yin and yang aspects, (for instance shadow cannot exist without light). Either of the two major aspects may manifest more strongly in a particular object, depending on the criterion of the observation.

Not quite as profound as you guys, but this song by Keane makes me think of Hal every time I listen to it; his contrariness and his fight against the different sides of his personality...in fact, I nearly used part of this as my homage.

'Is It Any Wonder?'

I, I always thought that I knew
I'd always have the right to
Be living in the kingdom of the good and true
And so on, but now I think I was wrong
And you were laughing along
And now I look a fool for thinking you were on, my side

Is it any wonder I'm tired?
Is it any wonder that I feel uptight?
Is it any wonder I don't know what's right?

Sometimes
It's hard to know where I stand
It's hard to know where I am
Well maybe it's a puzzle I don't understand
But sometimes
I get the feeling that I'm
Stranded in the wrong time
Where love is just a lyric in a children's rhyme, a sound bite

Is it any wonder that I'm tired?
Is it any wonder that I feel uptight?
Is it any wonder I don't know what's right?

Oh, these days, after all the misery you made
Is it any wonder that I feel afraid?
Is it any wonder that I feel betrayed?

Nothing left beside this old cathedral
Just the sad lonely spires
How do you make it right

Oh, but you try
Is it any wonder I'm tired?
Is it any wonder that I feel uptight?
Is it any wonder I don't know what's right?
Oh, these days, after all the misery you made
Is it any wonder that I feel afraid?
Is it any wonder that I feel betrayed?

How lovely, everyone!

A song lyric that always makes me think of Hal is:

"You said you'd light a candle and you'd say a prayer for me.
I feel the light has dimmed and gone."

Also:

"And maybe my intentions have been misunderstood.
I know you feel so beautifully wronged."

Both from "Can't Let It Go," by the Goo-Goo Dolls

Finally, I have a huge grin on my face due to one of the earlier posts in this topic, but I'm keeping mum as to why for now. *is mysterious* ;)

Un beret? C'est parce que la scene ou Hal parle le francais, n'est-ce que pas?

(Et oui, je parle francais aussi...) biggrin

(I noticed your place of origin in your profile, so...I took a chance to practice. For everyone else, I swear I didn't say anything bad! It reads: A beret? It's because of the scene where Hal speaks French, isn't it? Then: And yes, I speak French, too...)

Kat & wabbit, thank you for sharing those. I hadn't heard either of those songs and liked them both.  Very Hal-y.

fifi, yin and yang encompass Hal perfectly. I've wondered if when Lord Toby was thinking up his character if he was thinking along those lines.  His light and dark are extreme, but they blend and bleed together.

Pearl, I really used to dislike that song.  When that clip first aired I sat back thinking, ok I guess this song fits the scene...then a little thrill went through me when he said "super duper" and I realized he was singing. Now I see the song in a whole new light, singing along happily!

 Glad you enjoyed them!

And yes. So much yes to the yin and yang thing.

I had never had much feeling for Puttin' on the Ritz in general, but that scene is so wonderful that I just had to add it to my Being Human playlist. (What? Everyone has one of those, right?)

Absolutely love all the posts in this topic, I find it hard to think of one thing because honestly so many things remind me of Hal - or more particularly the unique, solitary, lone pain of Hal.

and then, there are the simple things like washing up!

Dominoes became a particular symbol for me from the get go (hence the forum name!) like you fifi, I feel the yin yang symbolism seems to fit Hal very well.
For me the ultimate Hal symbol is a yin yang made into the shape of the infinity symbol, this represents to me not only the non duality but also the cycles and the endlessness of Hal - ON a double one domino or a painting of that to put on my wall! (Any artists out there? )

I'm sure that Toby was aware of the 'yin-yang' thing.  As soon as I realised the significance of the twirling of the double 1 domino tile in series 4, I saw the parallel with the yin-yang symbol (I was a student in the 80's....I had the postcard on my pinboard - I think it was compulsory!)

Lol, domino - the first song lyric which came into my head when I saw this topic was "all kinds of everything remind me of you..."!!

For me it can be simple things...a white polo shirt...opening a new carton of eggs...a candy cane.
Does anyone else suck on a candy cane and picture Hal in his stripey apron?

halyes
It can be more complex things as well...the satisfaction I got when I bludgeoned a poisonous snake...the pleasure of moving fearlessly through the dark hours of the night...the smell and texture of raw meat.
Hal may speak to me a bit too much, at times!blushing

These may seem strange choices but something in all of these song lyrics remind me of Hal Yorke

I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places
where all the veins meet yeah,
No change, I can change
I can change, I can change
But I'm here in my mold
I am here in my mold
But I'm a million different people
from one day to the next
I can't change my mold
No, no, no, no, no

Now there's a look in your eyes,
like black holes in the sky

I'm worse at what I do best
And for this gift I feel blessed
Our little group (tribe) has always been
And always will until the end

Best topic ever!  I love discovering more awesome tangential Hal associations. As far as I'm concerned, I'm happy to be reminded of Hal throughout the day.

domino, all three fabulous songs.  I can completely see Hal in Pink Floyd's Shine On You Crazy Diamond.  I will have to re-listen to the other two with Hal coloured glasses. cool

J-B, too many things remind me of Hal as well.  I love discovering more. (hint, hint)

TJ, when I read candy cane, I was worried about what exactly of Hal was associated with it.  wink Well I certainly will be thinking of Hal in the stripey apron when I eat a candy cane now!

Back before S5, when Hal was still in the chair, I first heard Imagine Dragons Radioactive.  A couple of the lyrics had a feel to me, of Hal in the chair battling, who would come out, good Hal or bad Hal?

I'm waking up, I feel it in my bones
Enough to make my systems blow
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, oh, I'm radioactive, radioactive
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, oh, I'm radioactive, radioactive

Hal is so volatile, so like a radioactive bomb just waiting to go off.  I kept thinking, would S5 be a new age, one with bad Hal emerging?  Well, he did by the end.

And then lo and behold a fan made a Hal/BH video to the very song and it's quite perfect!  I know this was shared in fan vids topic long ago, but if anyone missed it...

I wore a yin-yang on my neck for about a decade. I'm still fond of the notion, and the fact that the female goddess it treating appropriately in the belief system makes me happy. So, yes. I approve. :)

 Merci beaucoup! :)

And of course there's a lot of bilinguals here - our Lord Hal is the thinking woman's friend.

Or...something like that. *evil grin*

And that concludes your wabbit spamming of this topic for this morning.

I'm going to bed. Enjoy Ripper Street, all those who will see it today while I slumber!

Oh, but another thing that reminds me of Hal? Well, more of Damien, actually? Every time I give blood. To a patient. It's an obvious connection, but bags of blood just make me think of DaMo. Oddly, not syringes. Guess I see those too much. But bags? Yup. Every time.
