A Stronger Loving World

Ripper Street Series 2 Episode 6

Ep 6/8

Monday 2 December

9.00-10.00pm

BBC ONE

Churches and synagogues are being burnt and desecrated in Whitechapel and Reid suspects the same hand is behind the various attacks - someone who would exploit the fragile peace that exists between East London’s diverse communities and see the streets escalate into sectarian mayhem.

Seeking once more the help of the Jewish mathematician, Isaac Bloom, Reid’s inquiries take him beyond orthodox religious beliefs, however – into the occult, millennial beliefs of those who see the world moving into a great and transforming cataclysm.

Meanwhile, the all-too-brief domestic happiness that Sergeant Drake has enjoyed is to be disrupted by the arrival of a friend from his wife Bella’s past, the mysterious and charismatic scholar Gabriel Cain.

3 days to go until episode 6!
By all accounts... this is going to be one MEGA episode!

according to whatsontv:

"the last 15 minutes of this unmissable episode will have you on the very edge of your seat – and, by the end, nothing will ever be the same again in Leman Street…"

From the 30 November TV Times

**SPOILER WARNING**

(If you are avoiding spoilers, do not look at the 7 December edition of the TV Times - it totally spoilers what happens in this episode when introducing the next (wish I hadn't seen it!))

So what did we all think? I am still in tears! Superb performances from Jerome Flynn, Gillian Saker, Paul Kaye, and sensational storytelling.

But ...where was Flight!!!!!!

Towards the end we saw him with his billyclub! Did he get knifed in the arm? Definitely not enough Flight!

He did, Bella slashed his arm to be free of him so she could grab Rose and hold the knife to her.

It was an excellent, absorbing episode, such terrific writing. And Jerome Flynn was just amazing...they were not kidding about the last fifteen minutes being edge of the seat stuff. The flower analogy at the start was a portent i think, especially considering it was a yellow tulip Drake tossed onto her coffin at the end.

I'm not usually a fan of Paul Kaye (his character in Being Human, even briefly was annoying) but he was excellent in this, soft spoken and menacing but this episode absolutely and deservedly belonged to Jerome Flynn. Heartbreaking stuff. Again.

There was a far bit of billy club this week whenever we saw Flight, wasn't there Pearl! yes he got stabbed in the hand or was it arm?!

Foe Me Jerome Flynn stole this episode, just such an amazing performance, for the most 'brutal policeman' Drake, for me, is the heart of the main trio because he has that inner, I dunno, softness.

More in the background action this week, as it was very much Drake, Bella and Rose's ep, with a splash of Jackson, but at least Flight was in it throughout this time!

Thank to the people who have cast their votes already, but for those yet to do so, click in the POLL at the top of this topic!

I thought that was an excellent ep!  It's good to see a bit more interweaving of the 'detective' stories and the character's lives - I think that's what Ripper Street does best.  Lonely job being a Victorian detective, isn't it?!  And I love Paul Kaye (not a big fan of Dennis Pennis....but he's a great actor - and does creepy very well!)

Agree that it was a bit disappointing that there wasn't more Flight story (or Damien face time!) but he is still there.....an almost constant presence......I get the impression that they don't want us to forget him.   I laughed out loud when they got the address and he looked between Reid and Jackson and said "I'll get a maria" - lol...he's learned his place!

He might not have figured in the 'next time' clip, but he is mentioned in the synopsis for next week...and they can't have given him that character profile without following it through - so I'm now really, really impatient for ep7!

Well observed glofigs and agree with you fifi, Flight was consistently all the way through this episode, I guess that we will always be frustrated if that exceptional talent isn't front and centre, but in terms of introducing Flight as a new character it is I think perhaps important to have him there just blending in too.

And I just did this screengrab...how amazing is that....in so many ways....

Thanks domino! Honestly, I prefer him to be in a little even if it's just background then not be in at all.

As the last screen shot shows, the whole set and photography was stunning, and am guessing that above shot includes some cool vfx wizardry too! it just looks so gorgeous and filmic n the way the grimness of London and that scene is portrayed. The addition of the religious statues too, stunning composition. Not that I know about these things in any great technical detail, I just know what I like.

Am I the only one who gets a buzz to see Damien in shot with the episode title credit like that?

honestly - I get a buzz just seeing Damien in shot...full stop!

I agree the vfx are superb in Ripper Street - the whole production is fantastic.  But I think I may have watched it all a bit too often - because I'm definately starting to recognise some bits of set from other scenes...

I'm willing to bet all but the bottom most part of the wall is VFX.

I too get a thrill when I see him on the screen.  Even when he's getting beat up and bossed around.

I suspect you prefer it when he's getting beaten up and bullied!
