For once i wanted to be wrong. I really didn't want Flight to be a spy. I think i could've been half comfortable with him perhaps being a spy for Abberline but for Shine??? oh my God. I was stunned. Now we know why they didn't meet before tonight's episode, now we know that Flight probably didn't 'fall asleep' on the job (and it could add another dimension to his expression standing in the doorway afterwards given how he reacted to the jeweller chap being garrotted in front of him)

So i spent the rest of the show slightly sick with nerves wondering if and when the penny would drop for Reid and Jackson regarding Flight and his duplicity.

But apart from Flight, another top notch performance. Charlene McKenna's speech to Drake while he was digging graves was beautifully heartfelt and heartbreaking. Shine's malevolence as well as Flight's absolute horror whilst witnessing Shine murder the jeweller was tangible. His set up is beginning to crumble i think. I'm hoping for redemption. I'm hoping he will have an attack of true conscience, take to heart what the priest said to him and throw himself at Reid's mercy and in turning evidence against Shine will redeem him. Or it could end badly for both Shine and Flight. Like i said, i feel a bit sick.

I wonder whether Abberline is somewhat involved. Is he playing a long game? Has Flight already confessed to him about Shine and is he gathering evidence for Abberline against Shine? And is that why Flight was seconded to H Division?

And i also think Long Susan is not going to submit to Duggan, not without blood being shed, none of it being hers, this was a gal who carried a gun in her garter belt last series remember? We shall see.

Having now rewatched tonight's episode, I can honestly say that Shine is the Fagin and Flight the Oliver Twist of Ripper Street.

It is not simply a clear cut case of Flight the baddie, he has been taken under Shine's wing when he was destitute and vulnerable, there is a history there.... perhaps Flight knows no other way or feels indebted to him.
There is a conflict in Flight - almost between the two 'father figures' (and i say that very loosely) Shine, who represents evil and Reid, who represents the good.
We are reminded of Flight's powerful speech in episode 4 when undercover, when he reveals his lack of guidance and not knowing what is right. And he is clearly a man traumatised. It is hard to see how hie can find any redemption in H-Division from here on in, it's tragedy unfolding.

I'm not sure whether Flight is being blackmailed per se. Perhaps he's involved in something he has no control over, or is losing control over or is over his head with. Shine is extremely formidable and Flight is afraid of him, you saw that when he saw him garrott the jeweller fellow.

It wasn't Flight practising boxing, they did say his name but i forget who it was.

Next week's episode includes the boxing competition, so I suppose they had to shoehorn it in somehow.

Agree that Flight feels beholden to Shine; he is obviously not wholeheartedly behind his tactics, which may be why he moved to Bloomsbury and then to Whitechapel. And those screencaps show his differing relationship with Shine, whom he feels confident with and Reid, for whom he's desperate for respect. His shrinking from any violence makes me think he had a very violent upbringing - and/or from the hands of Shine as well...

Well....wow!  Where do you start?!

I guess before the ep started I had resigned myself to the idea that Flight was working for Shine - although I have resisted the idea all the way through the series so far, and it was still a heart sinking moment when he went to see him!  I completely agree with your Fagan/Oliver analogy, domino....Shine said something about what Flight was when he found him - destined for jail or an early grave.  Which ties in pretty well with what he told Evelyn about himself.  I guess we've found out who his benefactor was!

I also agree with Ruby that he is in over his head.  He told the priest that he wanted to be a good man....Shine also said something about Flight being protected from the realities of his position and I don't think that he expected Shine to actually kill Hinchcliffe - he just didn't expect Werner to be there.

And I still don't believe that he knew that Shine was going to kill Merrick - I don't think he 'fell asleep' on purpose (although I'm not sure that he wouldn't have done anything to stop it from happening if he had known....)

I'm sure he will come good next week....although my heart quails!  Still trying to work out some of the next time stuff - was it Flight who had the revolver....and was it Flight and Reid fighting?

(is it wrong that I so loved the swagger in him when he went to see Shine, though.....and omg - those eyes...tears.....!!)

Oh yes...everything else was pretty epic too!  I need to just say Jerome Flynn.....!!! amazing performance!  (hmmm - bit coincidental that it happened to be Hinchcliffe's body in the coffin which fell open!)  But...sorry - still not feeling it for Reid and Cobden.  I sincerely hope there is some point to it...other than Fred Best's weasling - although I worry that may be a thread that is being set up for the next - now not to happen - series.

Right...OK.... I'll stop now...!

OOOh - just seen your post whimsy - excellent....exactly!

The scene where he witnesses Hinchcliffe's murder was electric, the horror and the fear. You could see him questioning what exactly had he let himself in for. His eyes. Those tears. He looked so young!

I'm not entirely sure about the age difference between Joseph Mawle and Damien is, but in the scene where we are introduced to them, Shine looked light years older than Flight. Flight looked like a boy in comparison. I think now Flight is feeling the net tightening around him and i hope that he takes that step to 'become a better man' and to throw himself at Reid's mercy (i think Drake would literally kill him, Jackson too) and attempt to redeem himself in the process. I'm also still hoping for an inkling that Abberline is working with Flight in some way to bring about Shine's demise. I keep thinking to how much he wanted Flight at H Division but if this is what he's doing, then why separate Flight from Shine?

I don't think it bodes well for Flight to be truthful. I can see him sacrificing himself in an attempt to become that better man, to redeem himself and bring about Shine's demise. I can't see him remaining at H Division afterwards. Or if there had been a third series, perhaps his inclusion would've been a way for Flight to continue to seek redemption and forgiveness within the division but i really don't think so. I think tears (and blood) shall flow for poor Flight next week.

Edited to add: Just wiki'd Joseph M and he is nine years and eleven months older than Damien. 21 March 1974 is his DOB.

Maybe flight is playing both sides of the court so to speak, doing what he has to to survive.

My experience on watching three times now is that Flight is by no means a fully willing participant in Shine's evil ways. Rather he has no choice and cannot see a way out.

The speech he made to Reid about the livelihoods of people like Nathan Hinchcliffe and those matters which are important to the police, seemed genuine and heartfelt

ripperstreetep7-11.jpg

and Look how genuinely excited he was when through his dedicated investigations he found out Werner's probable whereabouts!

"Now I have you"

ripperstreetep7-33.jpg

And that he could track him down

"There is one such sale begins this very morning Sergeant!"

"Then you  must go shopping Mr Flight"

ripperstreetep7-34.jpg

The look of stomach dropping horror and disappointment on his face when he was facing Werner but couldn't arrest him, realising he was protected by Shine

ripperstreetep7-15.jpg

His confession

"to be a good man"

ripperstreetep7-17.jpg

When he cannot evade finding Werner again

ripperstreetep7-23.jpg

His reaction to Shine's actions...

ripperstreetep7-25.jpg

It feels to me that Flight feels to be trapped in a situation way beyond his control, which he as a personal finds morally unbearable. When he is with Reid, he is keen to prove his worth  and goodness not only to Reid but himself, and realises that this is how he wants to be, the side he wishes to fight for. When he is with Shine it is as if he is bound to him by some hideous grip of obligation.

When I watched last night i felt there could be no hope for Flight. Today i have changed my mind. Because, Flight's moral compass STILL points towards goodness. If he finds the courage to go against Shine, even though the fall out would be catastrophic for him career wise, and in terms of what happens to him but he could come away with a lighter heart.

Alternatively, he could finish Shine....

Plus flight wouldn't have gone to confession if he was all bad. There wouldn't be any guilt there

And once again the subject of redemption raises its head in a role Damien has played. First Hal and now Flight, that's if he does go down the path of seeking redemption (even just going on his confessionals)

Does anyone have any shots of the 'next time' part? It went by so fast that i couldn't keep up.

Yes exactly glofigs, it is not a clear cut case of being a double agent, and there is an innocence and youth to Flight too.

Redemption and also confliction, torment, angst too Lisa...Damien is a master at these kind of roles!

Not got to the next time preview screenshots yet, these ones took quite a while. it will be tricky to get the Reid grabbing Flight by the coat shot!

You know what else has been playing on my mind today? Flights character profile says he proves himself 'worthy of Reids trust'.......

I wonderEd if someone was going to say something about that close up. I am surprised no one mentioned it during the chat last night.

I'm ashamed to say that while I squee'd seeing those lips on the big screen (and his gorgeous eyes too, man those eyes are incredible) I was more enthralled with his swaggering walk in that long jacket in a couple of scenes.  hence the gif.  that I've left open so I can pop over to look at every so often.  It's kinda like a Captain Jack Harkness type of jacket.  and swagger.  I get all sorts of feels.
