All nominations are thoroughly deserved. I'm glad that both Damien & William are nominated for male performance as I really couldn't split them. They enhance each others performance.

Totally well deserved!  And I agree Becca, it would be hard to split Damien and William.....not only were they both superb, but it was almost like a single performance.

There is a precedent for two actors sharing an award. Benedict Cumberbatch and Johnny Lee Miller won an award for Frankenstein. I am not sure what one it was though.

It would be amazing if Damien and William won a joint award. theatreThe reviews have been glowing for both of their multi-role performances

Whimsy - I would imagine that the nominations are jan-dec.....so a 2014 nomination is for the 2015 awards.  (Does that make sense?)

I thought that Chimerica won an award and that was last year. Or am I thinking of another award?

These were the awards for 2013 productions.  The nominations for 2014 are here....

http://www.offwestend.com/index.php/pages/the_offies

I guess that means that it'll be March next year before we know anything.

The nomiations are made by a representative from the 'panel' when they have been to see the production (if they think it deserves one), rather than at the time of the awards - which is why there aren't the same number of nominations in each catagory  Some catagories don't have any nominations at all yet.

DAMIEN MOLONY AND WILLIAM GAMINARA NOMINATED FOR OFF WEST END THEATRE AWARDS

The Body Of An American has received four Off West End Theatre Awards nominations, including Best Male for Damien and William Gaminara, joint leads in the 2 man play.

Written by Dan O’Brien, the play is also nominated for Best New Play, with James Dacre nominated for Best Director.

After a highly successful run at The Gate Theatre (London) 16 January – 14 February and The Royal & Derngate (Northampton) 27 February – 8 March, The Body Of An Americanreceived excellent reviews for both production and performances. With only the two actors performing a multitude of roles using different accents in a fast-paced dialogue, and close-up staging with a vivid backdrop of footage and filming, it has been described as innovative and intimate. A minimalist set comprising two chairs and a narrow run way covered with ‘snow’, placed the audience inches away from the actors, resulting in an intense and unique live theatre experience, exactly the kind recognised by The Off West End Theatre Awards, which aim to

"celebrate the excellence, innovation and ingenuity of independent theatres across London”

and

"help raise the profile and status of independent theatres in London by giving them greater power to promote their work individually and collectively and to reward the new talent that they nurture.”

See below for the other nominations in the same categories.

Best Male
William Gaminara for The Body Of An American at the Gate
Damien Molony for The Body Of An American at the Gate
Joe Morgan in Kiss Me Figaro at Riverside Studios
Michael Mullen in Superior Donuts at Southwark Playhouse

Rufus Wright for The One at Soho Theatre
Robin Soans for Visitors at the Arcola
Rob Ward for Away From Home at Jermyn St Theatre
Harry McEntire for Debris at Southwark Playhouse

Best New Play
The Body Of An American by Dan O’Brien at the Gate
We Are Proud To Present by Jackie Sibblies Drury at the Bush Theatre
Never Mind The Botox by Nick Reed at the White Bear Theatre
Visitors by Barney Norris at the Arcola

Best Director
Kirk Jameson for The World Goes Round at the Union Theatre
James Dacre for The Body of an American at the Gate

I have to admit, I feel a little thrill that The Body of an American, and Damien and William have nominations.  I haven't seen many plays and this is the first one I've felt such an intimate connection with.  Saw it 3 times, met Damien and William twice, went to the Q&A which also included James Dacre, have tweeted with Dan.  To say I'm hoping they win each category they are nominated in is an understatement!

Damien vs William is a toughy!  Both men were enthralling, their performances were intense, mesmerizing.  And meeting both men... both definitely deserve awards.  However, and I don't say this just because I was a Damien fan before TBOAA, Damien edges out William.  His transformation into Dan was spectacular.  I asked in the Q&A if he tried to emulate Dan (having met the man in the flesh) and I was told no, but from the few interviews I saw of Dan, he definitly picked up on his mannerisms and speech patterns.  And while focus of the play was on Paul's story, it was Dan's story that moved me the most, Damien's performance showing all the anguish and pain Dan kept hidden most of the time.  Both men's backstories were filled with ghosts, painful things they'd seen, painful relationships.  But Damien's performance was truly heartbreaking, everything in his body language from the actual crying tears (He cried about 5 times whereas whenever William cried he just hid his head but no tears came out) to his defeated posture, his lip and chin quivering, even finger tapping! (though that was for another character that he did a fabulous job with)... it was just heartbreaking.  It felt so real.

I cannot wait to see if they win.  They must!

oh yes, it is going to come down to that isnt it.. William or Damien! wish they were not competing as by all accounts it sounds like they both gave their absolute all, with incredible standout performances from both.. and with the role switching it seems like it should be a joint award.

Thank you for those deeper insights into their performances whimsy, funny I was just watching one of my fave scenes from BH 4 where Kirby is taunting Hal and a single tear rolls down his cheek... amazing Damien can do that in a live performance, repeatedly... such talent... and boy that must have taken so much stamina, surprised he didn't collapse in a heap at the end of every performance. I wasn't there (sadly) but.. bra-frikkin-vo Damo!

I agree whimsy.  The two performances were so intertwined that it's almost difficult to distinguish between them....in fact - as I've said before - everything about this production was perfect and I would love to see all of the nominees win.....it's unfortunate that Damien and William are both in the same catgory!  But, ulitminately, Damien took on the majority of characters and managed to make them all distictive and believable - it was amazing to watch him become one character after another - and he was just phenominal as Dan....

I totally agree with Whimsy that Damien was heartbreaking in The Body of an American. I was totally blown away by what a phenomenal actor he is having only seen him on Ripper Street before seeing this play. He was standing just feet away from me with tears rolling down his face. Incredibly moving play and so intimate and involving.

My friend who came to the theatre with me "didn't like it" when Damien looked at her! *shakes head in bewilderment*

Sadly TBOAA missed out on the OFFIES, so surprising as there is no more deserving play, from writing to performance and production - a most imaginative, intimate, original, innovative piece of theatre.

But huge congratulations to Damien, William and Dan on the very well deserved noms ! hug
