SCENE BREAKDOWN

(please note, this is not an official document, just an attempt at a scene breakdown purely for the purposes of information. All scenes in brackets are scenes where Damien does not appear).

Scene 3: 2.20-3.10

Jack is still interviewing Laurie and Toby at their house. When he asks about Toby's Mother (Rachel), Laurie says she is an unfit mother and does not have access to the children. Scene 7: 7.08-7.58

Jack engineers it so he is able to speak to Toby alone, by telling his father (Laurie) his fingerprints are needs to eliminate him from the enquiry. He then asks Toby about his grandmother and tries to get him to open up, but Toby is completely mute and avoids eye contact. Jack asks "ok, then, let me ask you Toby, did your grandmother take Hope away?" to which Toby shakes his head.

(Scene 8: Charlie tells Martha she's had a call from a neighbour who saw someone hurrying away from the house at 11.30pm. Martha tells her to get an e fit based on the neighbours description 7.59-8.24)

Scene 9: 8.25-8.42

Back at the victims house, Jack is on the phone, presume to HQ who tell him someone has been seen leaving the house. He asks Toby if his dad left the house last night, but Toby doesn't respond, only lowers his head.

Scene 14: 9.59-10.10

Jack radios Charlie in the car to inform her he has identified the suspect as Robbie Highland and will text her the address so she can meet him there. "Hurry up on this one"

Scene 19: 11.39-12.15

Jack is interviewing Laurie while we are shown more cctv footage from 8.31pm on the same evening, where he is seen buying more alcohol and arguing with Robbie, who is serving him. Laurie says he had never liked him and Jack asked if he could have said anything to upset him.

(Scene 24: 14.21-14.52 Charlie tells Martha that later cctv footage and phone records show Robbie rang the Wilkins' house that evening and only Toby and Hope were at home and a return call to Robbie's mobile from the house. )

Scene 25: 14.53-16.06

Jack and Martha interview Toby, who is with Fiona (Grandmother). Jack shows Toby the e fit and he identifies him as Robbie and says he sees him in the park sometimes. Scene 29. 17.55-18.45

Jack and one uniformed officer drive to the tube station where Robbie was headed and when Jack spots him he grabs and arrests him, read him his rights and cuffs him.

(Scene 30: 18.46-19,43 Martha interviews Robbie, He tells her Toby called him and he thought that something had happened to his sister. But he panicked so didn't do anything about it)

Scene 31. 19.44-20.03

Martha comes into the main office, tells Jack and Charlie that Robbie has told her he thought something may have happened to Hope, so it may not just be a missing child case but she may be very hurt.

(Scene 32: 20.04-20.21 newsreader voice over: "the search continues for 2 year old Hope Wilkins, who police believe was snatched from her home last night" police team search the street )

(Scene 33: 20.25-21.12 Martha interviews Toby with Fiona present. She tells him they had found have spoken to Robbie, who told them that Toby had said on the phone something really bad had happened to Hope. She insists Toby answers the question as to what had happened, but Toby replies, "Nothing happened, she just disappeared that's all")

Scene 34: 21.13-21.46

Jack, Charlie and Martha are in the main office, Charlie tells them that the blood on the t shirt is a positive match for Toby Wilkins and shows the photos of cigarette burns and bruising on Toby's body. Jack points out, "Laurie smokes" but Charlie responds "yeah but the age of the oldest bruising coincides with when Rachel came back into their lives, don't you think that's quite significant"

Scene 35: 21.47-22.21

Jack and Martha interview grandmother Fiona. Jack shows her the photos of Toby's burns and asks her how she missed them. She said she didn't know about them and becomes visibly upset. Martha informs her she is no longer an appropriate adult to accompany Toby during the interviews.

(Scene 36: 22.22-22.39 Fiona is seen outside, hugging Toby, until a police officer separates them.)

Scene 37: 22.40-23.35

Jack interviews Laurie. He begins apparently calmly, asking him about how he puts cigarettes out, then shows him the photos of Toby, one by one, and it becomes clear he suspects Laurie and is silently simmering.

(Scene 38: 23.36-23.49 Martha interviews Toby's mother showing her the photos of his burns and bruises.)

Scene 39: 23.50-24.08

Back in the other interview room Jack asks Laurie "are you responsible for Toby?"

Laurie reiterates what he said earlier about Toby staying with his mother without his permission "and this is exactly what I was afraid of"

(Scene 40: 24.09-24.24 Martha still interviewing Rachel asks here why Laurie wants her away from his children, she replies because he is a bully. )

Scene 41: 24.25-24.35

Back in the other interview room with Jack and Laurie. Laurie continues to try to convince Jack Rachel is an unfit mother, with a "history".

(Scene 42: 24.36-24.49 in the other interview room Martha then asks "Rachel are you an unfit mother?" Rachel, distraught, replies "I would never hurt my kids, I would never do this")

Scene 43: 24.50-25.31

Back with Laurie and Jack. Laurie tells Jack "you better not come near me for quite some time. ok?"

Jack, who has remained quiet while Laurie has ranted, replies

"Ok. What worries me you see Laurie, from my point of view, is that not once, have you asked how Toby is after this" before walking out and slamming the door

(Scene 44: 25.32-27.23 Martha interviews Robbie and ask him about nasty stuff on his laptop. Robbie tells her it is Toby's dad who is hurting him. And he and Laurie were arguing in the off license because he didn't want to serve him more alcohol, in case he hurt Toby again while drunk.)

Scene 45: 27.34-28.57

Jack is back in the interview room with Laurie

"What have you done with Hope"

"You physically and verbally abuse your son Toby, what's to say you haven't physically and verbally abused your daughter, who is now missing. Where is she Laurie"

Laurie denies all and says she must be with that "pervert who works in the off license" and why aren't the police questioning him?

Jack replies that he is in custody and they have questioned him, and he says that he called the house last night

Laurie becomes irate that they "believe a convicted child killer above the girl's father"

Jack tells him "I don't believe a word that comes out of your mouth"

Laurie becomes even more angrily and Jack raises his voice in response

"why are you stalling Laurie, why aren't you answering any of my questions I am trying to find your daughter and you're giving me nothing, ok?"

Laurie apologises and says he is stressed is trying to find his daughter too but he doesn't know where she is. Jack walks out slamming the door.

(Scene 46: 28.58-29.57 back to Martha interviewing Robbie. He tells her about the den in the park where he and Toby hang out.)

Scene 47: 29.58-31.25

"torches on let's find it as quickly as possible please."

They find a little girl's pink shoe.

Scene 48: 31.26-32.37

Jack and the team are still in the park. Jack calls Martha back at HQ to tell her no sign of Hope but they found a shoe and the den and a trail leading from there, but it goes dead. Martha says she will get the cctv footage for the area. when she watches, the footage shows Fiona Sullivan pulling up at and then entering the park, running back with a box and putting it in the boot of her car. She calls jack to tell him and that they are tracking Fiona's phone and she is heading to St Swithens church.

Jack and Charlie run to the car.

Scene 49: 32.38-33.54

Jack and Charlie and the team drive to the church where they find Fiona with the box. Charlie arrests her on suspicion of murder

Scene 53: 35.23-35.40

Charlie, Martha and Jack are in the main office. Charlie tells them the body is with the coroner, the box and blanket with forensics and she will take Rachel and Laurie to identify the child. Martha and Jack will go and interview "grandma".

Scene 54: 35.41-48.42

Fiona tells Jack and Martha she let herself in and Toby was asleep, she staged the break in. She wanted to save Hope from Laurie and put her in a blanket, and into the boot of her car to sleep but must have covered her up too tightly and it was an accident. she becomes very upset, and jack suggests a glass of water, so he and Martha can talk outside. Neither believe her story. Charlie tells them forensics show synthetic fibres were in Hopes mouth. jack reminds them Toby had said something had happened to Hope.

Toby tells them that his Gran came round and his dad got angry and he became scared that he would do the same to Hope as he does to him, so he tried to protect her by hiding her. When she started to cry he put the covers over her face. He smashed the window to make it look like someone had broken in. He took Hope to the park. Jack is silent but looks visibly upset

Scene 58: 42.01-42.30

Well, it was spotty for me, but with what I could piece together, it sounded intriguing.

There was a similar lay out in New Magazine (they may be owned by the same company who owns OK magazine and i think they in turn either own or have major shares in the Channel 5 tv station, could be wrong)

I've watched the clip and i'm so intrigued. I want this to be good and i'm hopeful that previews seem to suggest that it is, that the performances of the cast, are. I won't be able to watch this 'live' but i'm looking forward to watching it and fingers crossed that it's successful.

A few press on Twitter have hinted that they've watched Ep 1 and it is good, the magazine reviews I've seen are all positive, and Damien himself just told a couple mods tonight after the play that it looked good as well.  So I am very very optimistic that it will be. I hope the general channel 5 watchers tune in in droves and it does well with ratings!

I will be able to watch live - yay - though Ep1 I'm not sure as I have a minor outpatient procedure scheduled and I'll be under general anesthetic.  It was going to be right at the time that Suspects airs, but has been moved up, so I MIGHT just make it home on time.  I might still be a little loopy, but it will be a welcome reward.

The time it's on here is when i'm in the middle of bed time routines with my son and my husband will be coming home from work part way through it so i wouldn't be able to concentrate on it. I think i may avoid Twitter and catch it the following morning once my kids are in school/college and OH is off to work.

I'm very quietly excited so tonight i'm going to attempt to get both of my kids into bed before 10pm (not as easy as it sounds) and even though my husband gets home from work around 10.30pm tonight (he's a shift worker), he's going to have to suck it up and wait. I need to see this as close to live as possible.

Missed the promo! Didn't get it on the recorded version either - arse!

Enjoyed the show itself though, lots of twists and turns. It annoyed me that they're not the Metropolitan Police though, why bother changing the police force when everyone knows it's the Met?? Also couldn't work out the product placement either...maybe it's the pinky purple shirt company? Lol.

I found it gripping and full of suspense and although it was dark and heavy subject matter if moved along lightly..if that makes sense? my heart was pounding at points and there may have also been crying near the end.

The improv added to that suspense i think, it made it super intriguing as to what direction they were going to take the dialogue next, I love that he actors were involved in the creative process of this show.

Damien was fab, admired the way he contained it in some scenes but also loved when he let rip. and the arrest. :cuffs2:

I caught the little promo and i did smile. And yes, i got my kids in bed in time to watch it live. A minor miracle believe me.

Anyhow. My first impression is that this was better than i thought it would be. I thought there was a good, believable chemistry between the three characters, there was a very natural vibe about it and it was all very underplayed in the drama department if you see what i mean. My OH watched the last fifteen minutes and he said it felt natural, there was no dramatic license, and how he'd believe such a situation would evolve. It did sag for me three quarters of the way through but only slightly. I warmed to the three characters though i did have a slight problem with Jack dropping the F-Bomb with the father of the missing child earlier in the episode, i don't believe a detective would say that to a parent for example. It jarred slightly. Maybe it was frustration and it just slipped out, i don't know.

I enjoyed the episode, i was pleased that it was halfway decent and i will be tuning in again next week.

Glad you managed to see it live Lisa

Agree, by the first ad break I felt all 3 detectives were engaging in different ways. the F bomb was surpsising in the circumstance but that intrigues me about Jacks character... and all we know about him so far. We know he doesn't play by the rules but he gets results. Maybe things are not always how they are 'supposed' to be? perhps this was a hint at that?

Also noticed the slight chin wobble with the boys confession at the end. Looks like our Jack does get a bit emotional at times...and we got the outburst and the subtle emotion all in one ep.

I like him, I am relieved. wasn't sure I would!

Actually it was his expression when he spoke to Toby's father at the end of the episode that got me, it was very...intense.

I did like Jack too. It's a new different role for Damien and i think for a first episode he did a good job.

after a day at the hospital with no food, came home two hours after it aired to find the ways I thought I could view it had failed me.  major meltdown!  Thankfully domino helped me go through the process to find a way to see it.  Drugs, food, and viewing this and I was much happier.

So my first impression is that there were times that the dialog flowed naturally, and others where it was clear the actors were trying to figure out what to say.  But oddly, just the main trio.  Was there a script for everyone else?  I liked all three characters immediately, I think Martha is properly bossy, Charlie is really strong and capable, and Jack comes across as a bit... not cocky exactly, but sure of himself.  I really enjoyed the times he was firm.  The dropping of the f-bomb didn't bother me, I felt most of the time they were TOO nice, but that's in comparison to the hard-hitting detectives with the slick, sure lines all the time that I've grown accustomed to seeing in cop shows.  You know, like when they play good cop/bad cop and such.  Which isn't real life, and this seemed more real.  Cops have a system, but they react, they need time to process things.  Not all cops have epiphanies and put two and two together as smoothly as they like to portray on shows.  I liked that the detectives seemed like they were thinking things through.  I like that they didn't always know what to say, like Jack kept trailing off.  It felt in the moment and realistic.

The only complaints I would have are that while I didn't mind the handheld cameras, I wish they didn't keep filming like they were sneaking up behind a wall.  They kept cutting Jack off.  If it's documentary style I felt it should be right in there, like when cameras come along on ride-alongs.  The other thing that bothered me was the lighting at times.  It looked realistic enough but still good in some settings, like the room with the sofa, but in the interrogation room when Jack would get up and the overhead light washed out his whole upper body I didn't like.  And Martha and the kid's mom's hair looked like yellow straw.  (I know weird criticism)  And my third criticism was the mumbling (mostly by Damien)  He has a very lovely soft voice, I adore his accent and voice, but he could speak up a bit more, like when they go down the corridor and there is noise around them.  Or when he clearly was disgusted with the kids' father about the burn marks - I thought he would blow up, but he was really quiet and hard to understand.  Mind you, maybe it's the accent thing for me.  I have trouble with all British shows first viewing.  Easily remedied with multiple viewings!

I have to agree with you Ruby, the look on his face at the end of the episode is the one that got me.  It was very intense and there was something about his look - satisfaction that the father would be brought to justice for his treatment of his son, but still a hint of sympathy for him loosing his daughter and learning that his own son had done it inadvertently but he was really to blame... maybe I'm reading to much into it but that's what I got. I did not see a chin wobble, so again, rewatch excuse!

On a less serious note, I am loving that his name is first in credits & cast list, and the wardrobe dept should be commended on their choices for him.  he looks fab!

I'm a bit disappointed that it sounds like we will not see the detectives outside of work.  I would have liked to see how he copes with the stress and how he unwinds.  (and really do not mean filth, though yeah that thought crossed my mind. a tiny bitwink)  I just mean that if he's very emotional but has to rein it in at work, I wonder if he internalizes it or somehow we would see him let it out when he's alone, either screaming or crying or doing something physical, or he comes home and has a beer and watches telly and just lets it slip out of his mind...  We got a little sense of that in the smoking scene, that he'd quit, but obviously was stressed enough to smoke.  I want to see more character development.

I thought it was brilliant! It wasn't as fly on the wall as I expected. Damien was the outstanding actor in the drama and I would have said that even if I hadn't been a fan! Don't think that Fay Ripley was very good though. She seemed a bit wooden!
