Synopsis

In part two, the body of student Michael Collins is found on Crowford common. He was hit with a hammer in a manner that suggests that the killer is the person who attacked Moxton. Martha is convinced that Nate Turner is shielding the killer. Charlie notices that Collins’ sister Carol is on edge and senses that this is not just due to the strain of caring for her father Dennis, who has dementia Meanwhile, Jack is concentrating on Saul, who turns up at the crime scene in a distressed state. He claims to know nothing about Sadie Burns’s allegation that he hit her. His worsening mental illness, however, leaves him questioning his own innocence, as Martha’s press appeal yields a description of a male seen on the common around the time of the attack on Collins…

not long to go for the second episode of the 2-part special!

Here is a preview

SUSPECTS 2 EPISODE 2 – CAN JACK CRACK THE CASE? CHANNEL 5 PREVIEW

© Channel 5

© Channel 5

Suspects Series 2 landed on UK TV yesterday with an explosive and gripping first episode, and a case as twisty-turny and complex as they come.

When Jonathan Moxton is found bound and gagged in his home, DS Jack Weston (Damien),DI Martha Bellamy (Fay Ripley) and DC Charlie Steele (Clare-Hope Ashitey) begin to unravel the evidence and identify an ever growing number of possible suspects.

Jack is back and stronger than ever, but an unexplained past personal experience and his family history begin to effect his game, and after some heated exchanges with Charlie and a fixation on paranoid schizophrenic Saul Hammond (Dominic Power) as the perpetrator, “boss” DI Bellamy asks if he needs to take time out. Will it be Jack who cracks the case this time? or will it be him who cracks first?

I'm just posting this pic here so I can copy it better in to my phone.... It's quite risky, I might faint every time I look at my phone but that's the risk I'm willing to take.

I have sat here for 15 minutes after this episode ended and still cannot find the words. Everything has been ramped up in these episodes, the quality of the storylines, the performances... they were brilliant before but now they are stratospheric!
This one moved me to tears several times, the whole Jack and Saul storyline, so very moving, and how lucky we are to have been given so much of Jack's back story...what a tragic time he had. the way the plot unfolded, brilliant how we were kept guessing for so long and the twists and turns along the way. All of the cast were superb - Dominic Power and Luke Newberry stood out amongst the guest cast I felt.

11/10 for this one!

I'm still shaking from that episode.  The storylines were superb in and of themselves, but when you factor in the fact that the actors made everything up on the spot it leaves me in awe of their talent.  If this show does not win awards I lose all hope on TV. And I want more, more, MORE!

Fantastic insights into Jack.  The conclusion was so sad and sweet and I just want to hug him... I had a feeling at the end he was going to see Saul.  I know part of the brilliance of this show is that they don't follow the personal lives of the detectives, but this insight just leaves me wanting more, more, MORE!

The same thought crossed my mind whimsy, TV that is as original, immersive and captivating as this, with so many standout performances has to be BAFTA worthy!

you are welcome Pearl, more to come soon

The investigation itself in these episodes was brilliant, I cannot remember any other crime drama that gives the whole whodunnit element so superbly or so engagingly..the drama is gritty and un-slick, in a good way.. providing immersive and realistic drama which is more of a dynamic experience than just a passive viewing experience.. but the sophistication of the writing, plot frames and story arcs is way up there.

The gripping ride as you are watching has always been there with Suspects but it seems to have intensified, it is edge of the seat stuff, you are fully engaged in the process unfolding in front of you.

Suspects this time around has also brought a whole new level of emotion - the storylines tug at the heart strings even more, the performances are so moving and in this case the weight of Jack's history played through his every line. Damien was amazing, not only in the improv and actual dialogue but as always, the silent but intense expression of feeling... in this case angst. and pain... and the tension of trying not to bring that to his work and the team. The angst in episode 1 transformed into care for Saul, that was tinged with so much sadness as we learned about Jack's brother.

We also incidentally learned that Martha has children, when she told Charlie it was going to be a long night and she would have to ring home and cancel pizza with the kids!

I have to let this ep sink in. I can't find words, only word amazing comes out.

And now we know more about Jack and his story. We have been guessing, and now we do.

I noticed that Damien has really stepped more confidently inside of Jacks boots. His acting style come out more strongly and freely with character Jack.

I love to watch Damien doing impro, he can come up with so many colorful ideas (playing with pen, phone calls for girlfriend, sitting relaxed...). It's a pure pleasure. We have been noticing this before, he uses his surrounding as one of the elements of his acting style, very strongly. And he takes control of the room.

If you give free hands to do what ever actors like with everything they see around them, I think actors like Damien are most effective ones to create an image that you forgot they are acting and this is not real.

And the smoking. Damien doesn't smoke, neither does Jack. But still Jack likes to smoke a cigarette every time he is stressing about something. He kept that element from season 1. Only thing what I'm thinking (and hopefully not) is that is he doing same in real life...

Whole time I was in another world and these new episodes are really, really something else. They clearly know what they are doing this time.. I can't hope enough for the season 3 to come, I really want, like Whimsy said, MORE MORE MORE! (I started to think about Billy Idol- Rebel Yell chorus)

And I could have never guessed who was the bad "guy", I liked that element that they added someone who was potential killer, but ended up being good guy and had some kind of bond with one of the detectives...

The hugging scene... That was when the tears came.

Just... Wow.

There were so many touching Jack moments in these episodes, mostly the ones with Saul (Dominic Cooper). But the tears began for me when Damien delivered this reply to Charlie's question about his reactions around Saul. The subtle tone... heart aching.

Sorry to be nit picky domino but shouldn't that read 'affect my job' and not 'effect'? (sorry....)

But yes...another excellent performance by all around. We got to know a little more about Jack's personal history and why it's affecting him the way it is. Didn't he look pale and tired in this episode, that it was keeping him awake at night, both from a professional aspect and a personal one (reviving old, bad memories perhaps?) and Charlie interrupted a phone call to his mum too...that he'd check up on his mum is lovely.

Everything about these episodes just flowed more easily, everyone was more comfortable, there was the occasional smile from Jack, when he knows he's got his man so to speak, when he scores a point or makes a point in interrogation.

I would have liked to have known why Sadie was the way she was, what happened to her and it was also something that Jack made a point of. I got a feeling all the way through the double episode that she was trying to play Jack, to manipulate and perhaps attract his more male personality if you see what i mean. He said she showed psychotic traits, i saw more psychopathic. Of course they only had a short period of time per episode but Sadie was interesting.

While all three of the cast have definitely upped their games on screen (i found Clare particularly interesting, watching her do her job, wonder and worry about Jack her boss absorbing for example), i still think of the three, Faye is still the weakest link for me. As a trio though, they work well. I think she struggles more with the improv than the other two. And Jack dropping f bombs in interrogation still jars with me. Maybe some coppers do do that, i think if they didn't then he wouldn't but it really does jar, i don't think he should do that unless it's a deliberat ploy to jar the suspect and get them to reveal something that they wouldn't. And i have to assume that he's very comfortable in Martha's company to swear in front of her too. Charlie, i do get that, she's his junior but Martha?

And again, Suspects have the quietest most obedient solicitors in tv land don't they??? ;)

aww, your questions Ruby remind me of how big a skeptic Kat was about the police procedure on this show.  cry

My thoughts are that

1) the only police shows I've ever seen are highly scripted/slick ones that A WRITER wrote - not necessarily someone who knows how the police actually work day by day

2) since they have a police advisor and they spent weeks with actual police they got a sense of how far their characters can push and what is over the line.  and Jack is purposely a character that goes over the line.  Martha has to smooth things over in practically every episode.

3) the solicitors in this show are the one point I find comical/hard to believe.  are they simply supposed to be present as witnesses? (then why have all those cameras) Are they actually supposed to advise their clients at all?  Again my experience with lawyers is on TV shows.  They usually have all the answers, are quick to object... but how much that emulates real life I don't know.  Still, it seems these solicitors should at least say something!

Agree on your Fay comments.

I found it touching that Jack called his mum too. smile

I noticed he was on his phone alot in these two episodes and wondered if he was sending "cheeky texts to his girlfriend" as Damien commented in an interview.

My last thing, love his cheeky "have you done something with your hair" comment and smile to the gal in evidence room.  What a flirt!
