JACK CHAT

Suspects Series 2 Episode 2 | Scene Breakdown

Scene 1 ( 00.00 - 01.00  )

The episode opens with a News report voiceover, with clips of previous episode and a Press conference with Martha, with the new victim's (Michael Collins) Father present.

Newsreader: Two men in East London have been viciously targeted in near identical hammer attacks. The first victim, Jonathan Moxton, was assaulted yesterday lunchtime in his own home. He remains in a critical condition. Late last night, a second man, Michael Collins, was murdered on Crowford Common. A hammer was found at the scene. Police refuse to confirm that they released suspect, Saul Hammond, who is a paranoid schizophrenic, before the second attack took place. They have confirmed, however, that another man is helping them with their enquiries. Detective Inspector Martha Bellamy had the following to say.

MB:  We are asking the public, to help us to apprehend this person, or persons, as soon as possible, as there is a real and genuine danger to public safety. We are seeing clear links between these two brutal attacks.

Scene 2 ( 01.01 - 01.34 )

Jack and Martha are at the murder scene, with SOCOs and uniformed officers. Jack tells Charlie the attacker has a similar MO to Jonathan Moxton's attacker, and that they have not released those details to the press but they have told a hammer was found at the scene.

Scene 3 ( 01.35 - 02.00 )

Michael Collins' sister (Carol Collins) and Father (Derek Collins) speak emotionally at the press conference

Scene 4 ( 02.01 - 02.29 )

As they walk back to the car Charlie asks Jack about Saul and we  learn more about his family history.

CS: So, you wanna talk about Saul maybe, your favourite paranoid schizophrenic?

JW: Charlie, I have some mental health problems in my family. So this case is kind of hitting hard.  I'm trying to not let it affect my job. I'm trying to be professional about it. I'd like you to respect that and do the same.

CS: Sarge.

Scene 5 ( 02.30 - 03.54 )

In interview room 4 Martha interviews Nate Turner (solicitor present). She asks if he recognised the hammer used in the second attack as the one to attack Jonathan..

NT: No comment

Scene 6 ( 03.55 - 04.12 )

Martha is talking to someone in her office. Charlie asks jack what is going on.

JW: Probably copping it for releasing Saul back into the community. If it turns our Saul has done both of the attacks, we'll all be directing traffic on the Shetland Islands.

Scene 7 (  04.13 -  04.31 )

In the main office at the crime board Charlie tells Jack and Martha that forensics show it was the same hammer used in both attacks. But there  is no other DNA. Jack points out that Saul's whereabouts last night cannot be accounted for,  before walking away.

Scene 8 ( 04.32 - 05.00 )

Jack goes to the hostel to speak to Saul, but Sadie who answers the door, tells him he is not there and has not come back since yesterday. When Jack asks her where she thinks Saul may be, she replies the only place she can think of is his Nan's grave. Jack tells her to go back inside and shut the door.

Scene 9 ( 05.01  - 05.25 )

Jack reports back to Martha, he has checked Saul's grandmother's grave but he is not there. He has put a high alert out to all the bus, railway and underground stations and mental health institutions.

(shot of Saul's photo on Suspects board, blood on his hands)

Scene 10 ( 05.26  - 06.42 )

Charlie visits Carol and Derek Collins at home but Carol won't let her in. When questioned she said she was at home last night looking after he Dad. Charlie says she can see Carol has been drinking and if she needs help looking after her Dad it is there. Carol becomes irate and tells her to f*** off.

Scene 11 ( 06.43 - 07.10 )

Charlie plays Jack and Martha CCTV footage of outside the Collins' house last night. It shows Derek in a distressed state wandering around outside the front of the house and a neighbour arriving to help until Carol came home this morning.

Scene 12 ( 07.11  - 07.41 )

In Martha's office Charlie tells Martha and Jack that Carol's call data reveals she left Michael an abusive message before he was attacked: " next time I see you I am going to rip your f***ing head off" and some voicemails from Michael trying to get hold of her as he was driving to London.

Scene 13 ( 07.42 - 08.43  )

Charlie goes back to the Collins house. When Carol doesn't answer and she sees Derek left on his own through the window she breaks in. She notices a strong smell of bleach in the hallway, but Derek says it is because he had an accident and Carol had to clean up. Jack arrives, and also notices the bleach smell, he suggest they have a look in the kitchen while Carol is not around in case she is trying to get rid of stuff.

Scene 14 ( 8.44 - 8.56 )

Jack finds a crack pipe in the kitchen.

Scene 18 ( 10.01 - 10.58 )

Jack arrives at the crime scene, where Saul has been found and is now sitting in a distressed state in a police car. Jack asks where he has been and if he has taken his meds. In an emotional exchange, Jack tries to calm Saul down while he arrests him.

JW: Just relax. calm down. Take some deep breaths. Look at my... Look into my eyes. Look into my eyes. Take some deep breaths. Take some deep breaths, OK? Hang on. Hang on. Saul, calm down. Calm down. Calm down. Calm down. Saul, calm down. I'm taking you to a place of safety. I'm taking you to a place of safety. I'm arresting you for the suspicion of murder.

SH: I want you to arrest me.

JW: You do not have to say anything, but may harm your defence...

SH: Did I kill someone? Did I kill someone?

JW: ..anything you do say may be used in evidence... Saul..

SH: Did I kill someone?

Scene 19 ( 10.59 -  11.55 )

Martha talks to Charlie on the rooftop about why Jack is so 'het up' about Saul and we also hear the full story about Jack's family background.

MB: Basically, Jack's brother was a paranoid schizophrenic. The whole nine yards. He used to hear voices, violent episodes, that sort of thing. Dad couldn't cope. He left Mum and a 19-year-old Jack to cope. And, Jack went out, he went AWOL, came back one night, and his brother had very seriously assaulted his mother. She was in a really, really bad way, as far as I know.

CS: Where's his brother now?

MB: He didn't make it. He topped himself, so...

The detectives point out his DNA isn't on it but her fingerprints are all over it and her DNA on the mouth piece, and Michael's post-mortem shows he is clean. Charlie suggests that Michael found out she was stealing her father's benefits to buy drugs and she argued with him about it and attacked him with a hammer. Carol becomes upset and says she could not hurt her brother.

Scene 23 ( 13.51 - 14.55 )

Still in the interview room with Carol,  Charlie plays her the voicemail of her threatening Michael. She defends herself saying she was stressed looking after her father giving him 24 hour care. Charlie responds that she was out all night, so she wasn't giving him 24 hour care.

Scene 24 ( 14.56 - 15.09 )

Charlie plays Jack and Martha footage of "serial liar" Carol in the common last night, where Michael was attacked. Martha asks, "could she have carried out both attacks?"

Scene 25 ( 15.10 - 15.58 )

Charlie interviews Carol again, showing her photos of Nate Turner and Jonathan Moxton. asking her if she knows who they are. She denies knowing either of them and denies the attacks.

Scene 26 (15.59 - 16.29 )

Charlie and Jack discuss the case in the staff room, Jack asks her if she wants a cup of tea. Charlie says she knows Carol lies all the time but cannot make a connection between her and the first attack. Jack says they need to establish if she attacked her brother first, then try to make a connection between her and Jonathan Moxton.

Scene 27 ( 16.30 - 17.35 )

Martha and Jack talk about Saul outside while Jack has a smoke. Martha asks him about the interview and  tells him she will be coming in with him. Jack appears to be not too pleased at the idea.

MB: How's Saul's state of mind?

JW: Disastrous. He's been handcuffed,he's been detained,he's in tears, he can't remember what he's doing. He thinks he's killed Michael Collins.

MB: Got a psychiatrist coming in?

JW: She's with him now

MB: OK. So the plan for the interview, just talk me through it.

JW: Approach as normal. He's a vulnerable adult, I respect that, I appreciate that and I know how to deal with him. We start with him, you know, attacking Sadie yesterday.

MB: OK, I'm coming in with you. It's not a hand-holding thing..Just stakes are very high for me...

JW: For F***'s sake.

MB: ..And for you, as a knock-on effect, Jack, obviously.

JW: Yeah. OK.

Scene 28 ( 17.36 - 18.54 )

Martha and Jack interview Saul. Jack is compassionate and tells Saul they are going to go very slowly and he can stop any time, he is in control. Saul is clearly distressed and vey erratic. He tells the detectives he and Sadie just chatted. When Jack questions further Saul becomes even more distressed and Martha suggests they take a break.

Scene 29 ( 18.55 - 19.26 )

Jack visits Sadie at the hostel again and asks her for more detail on what happened with Saul yesterday. She claims he flipped out and hit her when she complained after he barged into her on the stairs.

Scene 30 ( 19.27 - 20.37 )

Jack and Martha interview Saul again. Martha asks if when he saw Sadie did she have a bruise on her face and showed him a photo. Saul replies that she didn't. Scene 31 ( 20.38 - 21.07 )

In Martha's office, Charlie tells Martha and Jack that Carol's alibi about taking her dad to the pool club checks out. Jack says forensics have come back on the hammer and that Carol is not involved. Martha says they have to bail her.

Charlie drives Carol home. She has been charged with neglect, theft of her Dad's benefits and perverting the course of justice.

Scene 33 ( 21.51 - 22.16 )

In the main office Martha tells Jack and Charlie that the press conference has paid off , a man had been sighted on the common, the tech team have come up with an e fit of him - he doesn't look like Saul. Jack says nothing but looks cynical.

Scene 34 ( 22.17 - 23.06 )

Jack has used his "male intuition" and tracked Michael's phone the night of his attack. It shows that the phone went static at the time of the attack but switches on again the next morning, Jack suggests it was taken at the time of the assault. He then shows them CCTV footage of a man, Daley Black, selling a phone at a pawn shop, his face fits the e-fit of the man seen on the common.

Scene 35 ( 23.07 - 23.13 )

Jack brings Daley Black to the front desk at the station, arrested on suspicion of robbery.

Scene 36 ( 23.14  - 24.02 )

Jack asks why he was pawning Michael's phone then, David replies that he found it and has never seen Michael before.

Scene 37 ( 24.03  - 24.32 )

At the suspects board, Charlie tells Martha and Jack that Nate and Daley know each other, and that Daley had used the same website Nate had to contact Jonathan, and had left Jonathan a few messages about meeting up - giving them their connection between both attacks.

(shot of ccv footage of Daley in the pawn shop)

Scene 38 ( 24.33 - 25.08 )

Martha interviews Nate Turner (solicitor present) who claims he does not know who Daley Black is.

Scene 39 ( 25.09 - 26.24 )

Jack interviews Daley Black (solicitor present) who claims he has never heard of Jonathan Moxton and on seeing his photo, has never seen him before. Jack shows him the text of his online messages with Jonathan, which show Jonathan telling Daley to leave him alone. Daley asserts he was not bothered at all by the rebuff.

Scene 40 ( 26.25 - 27.25 )

Jack and Charlie discuss theories of how Nate and Dale know each other in the staff room. Jack suggests perhaps Nate steals stuff from men he has sex with and Daley sells it? Charlie points out the level of violence doesn't match with the value of the items taken. Jack asks if there is anything in Nate's background suggesting he has a violent past, Charlie replies that he comes from a wealthy background kicked out of his house age 16 by his parents when found having sex with a guy and he ended up living on the street and has only come to the police's attention as a victim previously. She also doesn't think Daley is violent either.

CS: Are we looking for a third person?

JW: I think that's a very good question.

Scene 41 ( 27.26 - 27.37 )

Charlie picks up a pile of files from the archives

Scene 42 ( 27.38  - 28.04 )

Charlie show Martha the research she is doing on checking pawn shops and robberies to try and cross reference them to find a pattern

Scene 43 ( 28.05 - 29.50 )

Jack interviews Daley (solictor present) and asks him what he gets out of "assisting Nate Turner to assault closeted men." Daley denies assaulting anyone. Jack persists and Daley finally reveals something.

JW: This is what Michael Collins looks like now. He's dead. We found his body last night. This is what Jonathan Moxton looks like...today, assaulted yesterday morning. Michael Collins, dead. A hammer attack to the head. Jonathan Moxton, critical condition in hospital. Hammer blow to the head, severe brain damage. Murder, attempted murder. You're the guy in the grey tracksuit. Talk.

DB: I never met that guy. I met him online.

JW: I'm fucking bored of that excuse.

DB: I met him online. That was it. I never met him in person.

JW: The last contact he had with anyone online is you. "Leave me alone." "Piss off." "You're scaring me."

DB: Look, I met Nate a while ago and he told me he had a new boyfriend. And erm... I wanted to check him out online, so I checked him out online. When I did, I thought he was quite cute, so I thought I'd message him. And erm... he didn't fancy me, so that was it.

JW: He told you to fuck off.

DB: That was it.

JW: How are you and Nate working as a team together?

DB: Now and again I pawn some shit for him. That's it. Nate's a mate and he just said, "Can you get rid of this stuff?"

JW: Why are you going to all these pawn shops with watches and phones and... selling them and profiting from them when you know that this is happening to the victims?

D.B: I didn't know that was happening to anybody.

Scene 44 ( 29.51 - 30.13 )

Jack is on the roof top talking on the phone to his Mum when Charlie arrives to invite him to join her and Martha, as she's found some info.

Scene 45 ( 30.14 - 30.51  )

Charlie has added a lot more to the crime board and talks Martha and Jack through her findings, which confirm Nate is robbing items and Daley is fencing them. But also that a lot of victims are reporting a third person present, a woman  who fits the description of Sadie Burns.

(slow-mo glimpse of Sadie leaving her front door)

Scene 46 ( 30.52 - 32.00  )

Jack interviews Saul, beginning with an apology if he has ever upset Saul and asking him all about Sadie. Saul tells him he thinks Sadie is a "bit dark".

JW: Saul I want to apologise to you if I made you feel uncomfortable. I know this is a traumatic ordeal for you, for everyone at the hostel, and I'm sorry if I've upset you or...

SH: It's fine. It's fine. I just want to get out of here.

JW: Hm. Saul I'm trying to piece together elements of Sadie's life. Talk to me about her. You obviously know each other from living in the hostel. Does she have other friends that come and visit? talk to me about her lifestyle.

SH: I don't know her friends. I don't talk to people. She talks to me. Can I tell you something?

JW: Yeah.

SH: Can I tell you something? You won't tell her? I think...I think she's a bit dark. She's a bit dark.

JW: Dark how?

SH: I can't put my finger on it. But I wouldn't want to piss her off, do you know what I mean?

Scene 47 ( 32.01 - 32.27 )

Jack talks to Martha and Charlie in Martha's office. He tells them that FME (Forensic Medical Examiner) report the bruising on Sadie's face looks more like a door hit her in the face. Martha questions why would she lie about it, but it gives them permission to search the hostel.

Scene 48 ( 32.28 - 32.58 )

Jack and Charlie go to search the hostel. Jack crowbars the lock on the door to Sadie's room. During the search Charlie finds a carrier bag with blood and hair in it.

JW:  Shit that's where Sadie stashed the murder weapon.

Scene 49 ( 32.59 - 33.18 )

In the main office Jack reports to Martha and Charlie that forensics found Sadie's fingerprints all over the bag, and the blood and hair belong to Jonathan Moxton. Also, the DNA found in Jonathan's bathroom matches Sadie's.

Scene 50 ( 33.19 - 33.50 )

Jack and Martha interview Nate Turner, both very firm that he needs to tell them where Sadie is before she attacks someone else. He claims he does not know where she is.

Scene 51 ( 33.51 - 34.09 )

Martha gives a press conference urgently appealing for info on Sadie's whereabouts and warning that she is highly dangerous.

Scene 52 ( 34.10 - 34.31 )

Jack and Martha interview Saul. Jack informs him that it was Sadie who attacked Jonathan and killed the man on the common, that she's been taking advantage of him and he didn't kill anyone and hasn't done anything wrong.

Scene 53 ( 34.32 - 35.12 )

Jack is at the front desk while Saul collects his belongings before being released. Saul shakes his hand, then hugs him.

Scene 54 ( 35.13 - 35.29 )

Charlie comes into Martha's office to tell her and Jack that someone matching Sadie's description has just bought an axe at a local hardware store. Jack and Charlie run out of the office.

Scene 55 ( 35.30 - 35.53 )

While in the car, they receive a call from Martha telling them Sadie has been sighted in the vicinity of Walbrick Road Station.

JW: (to Charlie) That's near North Park Cemetery. She's going after Saul. (to radio) That's all received. DS Weston on the way.

MB: (at HQ) I'll arrange back up Jack

Scene 56 ( 35.54 - 37.04 )

Jack, Charlie and two uniformed officers arrive at the cemetary and run towards the area where screams are heard. They find Sadie viciously attacking Saul with the axe. :( She throws the axe and runs when they see her, Jack persues while Charlie stays with Saul and calls for an ambulance. Jack and two uniform officers restrain Sadie while she struggles and screams, Jack arrests her and uniform take her away. Jack takes a moment, his hands on his head.

Scene 57 (37.05 - 38.02 )

Martha and Jack interview Sadie (solicitor present). Sadie is remorseless and laughs. She claims Nate was like her little brother and Jonathan was taking him away from her.

Scene 58 ( 38.03 - 39.19 )

Jack and Martha interview Nate (solicitor present). Nate reveals Sadie helped him when he was on the streets and they soon worked out they'd make more money if they worked together, so while he was with men she would rob them. Her violence started later on when nate was being attacked by a man  and she sorted him out, and got hooked on it.

Scene 59 ( 39.20 - 40.11 )

Back in the interview room with Sadie, she agrees with Jack that she enjoys what she does or she wouldnt keep doing it. She tells them Nate should be let off  and that she killed Michael, with the same hammer, while Nate was in custody so he wouldn't be implicated in Jonathan's attack and would be let off.

Scene 60 ( 40.12 - 41.28 )

Back in the interview room with Nate, Jack asks him about how he felt watching Sadie kill Jonathan Moxton. Nate is very emotional and tells them she turned up at Jonathan's and he told her to  go away but she didn't, and when she attacked him, he ran away and didn't try and stop her, that Jonathan was everything to him because he was the only person who cared about him, apart from Sadie.

Scene 61 ( 42.29 - 42.43 )

Back in the interview room with Sadie, she tells them Jonathan's attack was not pre-meditated. Martha challenges that because of her MO. (tying up, knickers in mouth). Sadie continues to be remorseless and Jack questions her psychology.

JW: Why do you think you're like this? I'm intrigued by the psychology.

SB: Why I'm like this.

JW: Yeah. Because you're not normal. You're not exhibiting traits of normal behaviour. You are exhibiting traits of what I would call psychotic.

SB: You've seen nothing yet, then.

Scene 62 ( 42.44 - 43.05 )

In the main office Charlie finishes paperwork and Martha asks  Jack how Saul is, he replies that he is stable and declines the invitation for an after work drink as he is going out for a session with the Irish lads. Charlie looks up as he leaves, as if questioning where he is really going.

Scene 63 ( 43.06 - 43.50 )

Jack is really at the hospital, sitting in the waiting area to hear about Saul. Charlei arrives having worked out where he is really going.

JW: Ah, Jesus. Don't you ever have a night off?

CS: Nah.

JW: Who are you here to see?

CS: Saul. And you. How is he?

JW: I think he's going to be OK. Doctor said he's gonna make a full recovery. Which is great.

CS: Police a bit soft now, are we?

JW: Speak for yourself.

Doctor: You can see him now.

JW: Excellent. CS: Cheers.

JW: Charlie? Thanks for coming.

CS: Pleasure... Jacqueline.

JW: Charles.

Nate is very emotional and tells them she turned up at Jonathan's and he told her to  go away but she begged him to let her in, so he did, and when she attacked him, he ran away and didn't try and stop her. He tells them Jonathan was everything to him because he was the only person who cared about him, apart from Sadie.

 suspects2ep2-69.jpg

Scene 61 ( 42.29 - 42.43 )

Back in the interview room with Sadie, she tells them Jonathan's attack was not pre-meditated. Martha challenges that because of her MO. (tying up, knickers in mouth). Sadie continues to be remorseless and Jack questions her psychology.

suspects2ep2-59.jpg

Jack is really at the hospital, sitting in the waiting area to hear about Saul. Charlie arrives, having worked out where he is really going.

suspects2ep2-62.jpg

JW: Ah, Jesus. Don't you ever have a night off?

CS: Nah.

JW: Who are you here to see?

CS: Saul. And you. How is he?

JW: I think he's going to be OK. Doctor said he's gonna make a full recovery. Which is great.

CS: Police a bit soft now, are we?

JW: Speak for yourself.

Doctor: You can see him now.

JW: Excellent. CS: Cheers.

JW: Charlie? Thanks for coming.

CS: Pleasure... Jacqueline.

JW: Charles.

Hi all!

I posted the text version of the episode breakdown, but the post was too long to add screen caps, so had to post the full version in three parts. If anyone sees any typos please let me know.

Hi everyone!

Ahead of tonight's Jack Chat, please read the helpful hints and chat guidelines below.

chat guidelines

1.Log ins are available for this chat, but anon posting is also open. Log in if you would like to use a username, but if not just join in anonymously

2. the discussion will be scene by scene with screencaps, and is timed (see schedule above). Experience has shown this is the best way to cover an entire episode and not let the chat become chaotic. (there has to be a system, Hal says so. )

3. refresh your page regularly to keep up with the chat and to see new comments

4. please stick to the scene we are discussing, that way we will have time to discuss the whole episode and the whole group can follow and join in without it becoming chaotic or going off on tangents

5. please keep comments a reasonable length so the chat flows and is easy to follow

6. please try to join in or leave off without disrupting the chat if you join the chat late or leave early

7. Suspects does contain strong language! so there will be some in this chat

8. Suspects contains difficult subject matter, if we don't address certain aspects, it is not because we are being flippant, it is because some topics can be difficult to talk about and we want to be sensitive to / respect that

9. This chat topic will remain on the forum for anyone to read, or to add to, in the future.

10. If you need assistance during the chat please send a private message to admin (Damien Molony Forum) so as not to disrupt the chat.

All help with keeping this chat on track is greatly appreciated, so that everyone can follow and take part.

Thanks!

See you in 15 minutes.....

Hi! might not be able to contribute quite so readily as I'm using my phone this time. It likes to play games like throwing me off the internet in the middle of things, or taking 5 mins to submit posts!
