50s Hal really gives me the heebie jeebies. Much more so than any of his other 'incarnations'. Find it difficult to look at these pictures without thinking RUN!!
But he definitely has a noir-ish look about him. Is he the roguish detective or the charming but incredibly dangerous villain?
there needs to be villainy in noir. and a femme fatale. Though I have mixed feelings on how empowered the classic femme fatale really is... I would very much like to see a story where Hal is undone by a woman (not that way you lot *rollseyes*) whose power is not purely her sexuality.
Hmm.. There's usually narrator voice too in noir... Damien's voice is like soft silk, would have fitted in noir perfectly!
My "Hal noir" film plot would go like this:
1954 New York City, Prospect Park. Young woman heiress found dead in the park at night.
Near the crime scene police found unconscious man with woman's blood on his clothes. Man was delivered to hospital where they declare him to be dead because they couldn't find his pulse. He was main suspects of the crime according to police, but before dawn the man's body is gone.
When Hal woke up he didn't remember anything about the nights events. He left the hospital and waited for the night so he could go back to the crime scene and find the clues and answers. Did he really murder the woman? And if he did why her, why there and who attacked him? As a vampire, he usually was careful and precise.
Woman detective gets interested about the dead man suspect who's body disappears from the hospital before autopsy. Police thinks that hospital lost the body or somebody claimed it so they couldn't find the connection to murderer.
Lost and without directions to solve this crime she returns to the crime scene. To her horror, she found a dead man suspect on the crime scene as well, alive.
Hal persuade the woman detective to believe that he is innocent and after long night mysterious talking they decide to join their forces and find the murdered together. Victim of the crime is revealed to be heiress who did have connections to vampires. Hal knows to how to follow vampire's work while woman detective is very clever and connects the pieces.
Slowly when Hal is pulling this woman deeper in the danger while searching the murderer, she fells in love with him. And Hal starts to have affair with her. Slowly he will start to have feelings for her too, she reminds him of Sylvie and the good Hal rises his head. She will find out what he is, along side what murderer is.. A vampire.
Murderer was a jealous vampire Henry, who was trying to make Hal look bad in the eyes of Old Ones, capture him himself and earn the affection of the Old Ones by this act. The Old Ones arrive just in time when Hal and women detective have found Henry. Old Ones will punish Henry by killing him.
They want to send Hal to England sense he has been getting too much attention by this case and the people knows his face too well. And they want to kill the woman detective sense she knows too much. Hal's pleaded them to save her life. They finally will, but only if she will become a vampire.
Hal refuses to change her, but the Old Ones will make him do it. After she becomes vampire she is excited of her new life as immortal, she will become cruel and wild. She will have terrible dreams for future which Old Ones like, but Hal doesn't.
Hal decides to leave her behind sense there's very little good left in her and what he cared about. And she wants to stay. She lefts him a note before they apart and Hal travels to Southampton. By this act good Hal dies, bad Hal is reborn once again.
He will read the note in train which says: "My love for you will be the greatest mystery of my life. Hopefully one day we'll meet again and solve it together.."
Ending scene would be:
1955 a man in train reads letter which tells him he had a job from London underground. When he gets off in Southampton, Hal will come and greet him through crowd, shook his hand and quietly says to him that he is part of welcoming committee for supernatural brethren...
