Here's a more detailed preview of this episode (in which I also ramble about how good series 5 is so far..)

JACK IS BACK! Abduction, jeopardy, tension, corruption: Suspects S5 Episode 4 Preview

Suspects Series 5 Episode 4

Suspects continues on Wednesday and we have a preview of Series 5 Episode 4!

The fifth series of Suspects has reached the half way point and one thing is already clear: it’s the best so far.

Suspects has always been gripping, immersive viewing, with cleverly constructed, intense storylines. But this series has taken the show to a whole new level. Having one storyline extending across six episodes allows for greater plot building and character development, and the first half of this series has given us altogether more – more intriguing layering, more twists and turns and more galvanizing suspense. And Damien’s character has been central to it all.

Jack’s ‘Lone Ranger’ approach has been amplified by the killing of his boss, and the ensuing investigation has caused greater, more engrossing, team tensions and conflict. We’ve also been treated to a bigger focus on his personal life – with the case bringing him face to face with his past and the revelation that he has a daughter – and watched the fallout affect his professional life.

The added dimension of a changed team dynamic and facing a new corrupt boss, Jack’s situation is also more volatile than ever before.

The scope of this series allows the sense of jeopardy for Jack to be stronger than ever, and that makes for even more dramatic and compelling viewing.

So what happened in last week’s episode?

suspects series 5 episode 3

Last week’s emotion filled episode 3 saw Jack’s daughter Lucy (Lucy Carless) at the center of a grim rape case. With Jack breaking the rules to protect her, causing friction with Charlie (Clare-Hope Ashitey), earning him a telling off from Alisha (Lenora Crichlow) and narrowly avoiding suspension from corrupt DCI Drummond (James Murray), the latest instalment ended with Jack discovering Lucy had been abducted from his flat, with evidence of a bloody struggle in the bathroom.

What is coming up in episode 4?

Here are four things we know for sure.

1. The jeopardy for Jack is going to escalate. The Jack we know and love will obviously not be able to sit back and just let others carry out the investigation into his daughter’s disappearance. Everything is going to ramp up in line with his emotions.

suspects series 5 episode 4

2. The tension between Jack and the team will continue. There will be more tellings off and more private chats between Jack and Charlie, who continues to try to have his back, despite everything.

suspects series 5 episode 4

3. The plot will thicken. The case will become even more delightfully complex, as the team are taken full circle when they discover a link between Lucy’s abduction and the prime suspects in Martha murder.

Suspects Sereis 5 episode 4

4. The whiff of corruption will get stronger. The mystery surrounding dodgy DCI Drummond will increase as the case brings him face to face with the club owning brothers Mo (Neil Stuke) and Stan (Sam Stockman) again.

Another certainty is more stellar improv from the entire cast, so seamless they make us forget the show’s format.

For more details on this Wednesday’s episode, check out the synopsis below. (Spoilers alert!)

Suspects Series 5 Episode 4 Synopsis

Last week Jack came home to signs of a violent struggle and blood spatters in his flat. It looks as though Lucy has been abducted, but why?

As Alisha takes control of the investigation, Jack finds it hard to adjust to his new role as just witness and next of kin. Gary discovers that Lucy visited the club owned by notorious criminals Mo Jones (Neil Stuke, ‘Paranoid’, ‘Silk’) and Stan Turner (Sam Stockman, ‘Undercover’, ‘Whitechapel’). Gus Adebayo (Osi Okerafor, ‘Fury’), their head of security, matches the description of the man seen bundling Lucy out of Jack’s flat and into a van — but Gus and his van are missing…

Jack cannot bear to just wait for news, but he is so emotional when he turns up at the station to help that he threatens to disrupt the investigation, forcing a sympathetic Drummond to reprimand him.

A breakthrough comes when a young lad named Jimmy (Stuart Campbell) enters the station with significant information. Lucy is in grave danger…

So many twists and turns! I love seeing Jack being so fiercely protective of his daughter. His frustration at being sidelined and not being able to do anything to help find Lucy was palpable.

The corruption story has got more complicated and I'm very worried about Drummond's manipulation of Jack. I'm fearful that he's setting Jack up as his scapegoat. Let's hope that Charlie and Gary save the day! I can't wait for next week's double episode finale.

Another excellent episode! Despite his angry outbursts, Jack was far more restrained and well behaved than I expected he'd be, knowing how hot headed our Jack can be.. and all things considered.

Agree with you Rosie, it is endearing to see him so protective of Lucy and a side of his character we've not seen before perhaps. Interesting that they mentioned a counsellor in this episode - with all that has happened to Jack in recent weeks, let's hope he makes use of that service!

Drummond really is setting up Jack on lots of levels.. not only is he complicit in the gun disposal, but now in covering up a murder.

I'd need to watch again to check timings, but it struck me that if push came to shove (no pun intended) and manipulative Drummond somehow had to reveal there were two people there, he could say the other was Jack, who was so angry at Stan already..

Another harrowing case involving an underage child, Jimmy's story is heartbreaking. I admire Suspects for not shying away from tough issues, but it is not always easy to watch them.

Thank goodness Gary has spoken up ( isn't he turning out to be brilliant?) hopefully this is the beginning of exposing the DCI for the corrupt cop he is! There is bound to be lots more tension and jeopardy for Jack though along the way...

Alisha is fitting in really nicely too.. curious to find out more about her past and her connection with DCI Drummond... perhaps he moved her not to protect her but to keep her from finding a truth about him?

The plot thickens!

It is a double bill finale next week, cannot wait!

Jimmy's story definitely felt like a punch in the chest. I enjoy and respect how Suspects is covering a wide and realistic crime scale.
And I pretty much cheered when Stan was thrown off the parking lot.

I loved how protective and father like Jack is being, so quickly towards Lucy. Yes she was kidnapped but he could of been much more chill. But he wasn't! Jack has his dad brain on and it was distressing in a way to see him so frustrated that he couldn't help as much as he wanted to.

The double bill next week will be worth staying up for! I'll have to make sure I've got drinks and snacks. biggrin

Another excellent episode.

I was surprised that Jack behaved himself, that he did what he was told because i was fully expecting him to go rogue and interfere with the investigation. The revelation of the young boy who was being abused and who his father was, was a genuine double take for me. And considering how his father got rid of Stan, Mo was always a background influence but i think we're going to see that change now. I'm also worried about the implications for Jack and i have a horrible feeling that he's going to be the scapegoat to Drummond who'll use his rank to wriggle out of any scandal. It's a pity because despite his corruption, i do like Drummond and the actor who plays him is excellent.

Double episode next week and i have an awful feeling that Jack will be left holding the bag, having been neatly stitched up by his boss. I just hope Gary and Charlie will have his back and realise Drummond's implication in all of it.

(And i'll be away next Wednesday, the earliest i'll be able to watch the episodes will be Friday)

Worth waiting for Ruby! This series is really gripping and the revelation that Mo was Jimmy's father was a genuine shock. The body lying at the foot of the car park was probably much more realistic than is usually shown. There is often only a small amount of blood.

I had a problem with how much blood came from Stan so... Quickly.
It was the only part that bugged me. Stan hit the ground, abit of a fumble, then we see the body and blood was coming out of him from head to toe. And while it would of been possible for such a splatter of blood it really ruined it for me that there was so much blood in a matter of seconds from hitting the floor. That much blood doesn't even come out of someone who jumps from a bridge. At least not that fast.

I'm intrigued by Alisha's link to Drummond. Does she know more than she's letting on or is Drummond trying to ensure her loyalty to him?

That episode was truly amazing, it just keeps getting better and better.

I loved the way Charlie was so protective of Jack this week and how sympathetic she was towards him. For once I thought Alisha was quite good as normally I find her bland and irritating. Gary continues to fit in well. I think Jack behaved well, considering the stress he was under - his boss gets killed (even though it's as though Martha never existed at the moment); he finds out he has a 16 year old daughter who has been living in the household of the local crime crown prince, said daughter gets abducted. I was glad to see Gary being reminded about the counselling service.

I cheered when Mo pushed Stan off, I had total sympathy with him at that moment. I just can't understand why Drummond didn't just say that Mo was there but overcome with emotion and ran off. I did have a problem with so much blood so quickly, though - it seemed to be from the whole body. It wasn't so much the amount as the speed.

I can't remember Mo making any threat about Lucy after he threw Stan over the wall, muse have missed that bit. What is Drummond up to? He tells an obvious lie to Gary, tells Jack what really happened, then tells him that Lucy is in danger from Mo and needs to go away for her own safety. Like others, I have the awful feeling that he is trying to set Jack up to take the fall. Fortunately, Charlie is a witness to Jack being elsewhere at the time - having said that, I hope the times add up. I just don't know why Drummond wants Lucy out of the way, unless it's to unnerve Jack.

Can hardly wait for next week, when hopefully all will be resolved, Drummond will get his just desserts and they get to prove who killed Martha and her husband.

I just don't know how they're going to top this season.

Drummond was covering his backside by not going after Mo then, for telling Gary there'd been only him and Stan up on the roof. Mo obviously has him on his pocket and to go against him means all his secrets coming out and he flat out lied to Jack about Lucy being threatened, again to cover his own complicity. There was no one on the roof apart from him, Mo and Stan. Stan is dead, Mo has taken off so it's only his word that Lucy was supposedly threatened. And he didn't threaten Lucy.

Also had a problem with the blood, Stan looked like he landed on a blood filled balloon, there wouldn't have been that much blood- would've been mostly around his head and not everywhere else, I don't think there was enough time for the blood to spread as quickly as it did as Gary heard the impact and went to investigate immediately. I'd think high velocity blood splatter wouldn't have looked like that either (watched a lot of stuff on the Crime and Investigation channels on Sky ;))

Another brilliant episode!  This series is an absolue corker!!  The tension/frustration is palpable and I love the frantic, somewhat chaotic effect that is obviously created by the fact that the dialogue is improvised.  One of my favourite moments was when Jack kicked off and accused them all of sitting around doing nothing......that uncomfortable stunned silence which followed - it felt as if no-one literally knew what to say! - and then Alisha awkwardly starting to calmly try and explain their procedure..... Just one little gem of realism which has stayed with me.

On first viewing I had assumed that because Jack was in the car with Charlie when Stan 'jumped' off the roof, then it would be proveable that he wasn't on the roof.....but I'm not so sure anymore.  In theory he could've been on the roof with Dan and Stan before Charlie found him and Lucy....  - so that's a worry!  Especially if he starts lying to try and cover for dodgy Dan.

I don't think that Alisha knows about Dan - and I think she was telling the truth when she said that he was a good copper.  I suspect that whatever Mo and Stan have on him is his achilles heel and that in all other areas he has had an exemplary career....his sympathy for Jack feels very genuine, but I also think that he will be prepared to drag down anyone to protect himself.

But I don't get why Dan wants Lucy in witness protection.  I presume it's just to strenghen his story that Mo threatened her which in turn is to keep Jack quiet about Mo being on the roof......but surely that's just more likely to encourage Jack to go after Mo?!

(Must admit that I do keep wondering how the investigation into Martha's killing has stalled so completely - apparently no-one is following anything up, because they still haven't discovered that the actual murder weapon is missing from the evidence store!)

Tbh I have mixed feelings about next week being a double bill.  On the one hand it's an exciting prospect, but I was looking forward to another two weeks.  And next Thur is my first day back at work after the school summer hols....so not good timing!  I'm also a little suspicious as to why they've decided to air both eps in one hit.....

Yes, and with Stan, who was the prime suspect, now out of the picture where does that leave the investigation into Martha's killing? i can't believe the case would be left there - and want to see Jack and Charlie catch their culprit and see him put behind bars... and see proper justice served for the loss of Martha.

So - is there more to it than Stan? Methinks definitely !!!!!

Just like last week, I feel that this week the acting has skyrocketed.  Anyone know how much story time has passed???  This has got to be the most turbulent time in Jack's life. (and from what we know of his past both while working as a copper and before he's no stranger to turbulent!) From the discovery of Martha, to that investigation getting stalled, to discovering he has a kid, to her getting kidnapped... Damien did a good job of blending overwhelmed, protective, complaint, frustrated, and scared.  Normally cocky and sure Jack has really stepped into the father role - chomping at the bit to move heaven and earth to find his daughter but looking completely helpless at the situation.  Gary, I love Gary.  He's green and sweet and sympathetic.  (And gives me lots of Tom feels)  I was afraid he'd keep quiet his suspicions and was relieved when he confided in Charlie. The first couple episodes of this series I was worried about Charlie getting the short end of the stick with all the attention on Jack having found Martha, and the new crew, and then Jack's daughter... but the past two episodes she's really shone.  Pragmatic, sympathetic, loyal - she and Jack have always had an on again/off again relationship, it seems.  He's always going off on his own (often fucking something up), and she's had to confront him so many times.  But she's definitely got his back.  I'm not too worried about Drummond getting it over on Jack.  Jack is too involved right now in his bubble of troubles to work out he's beeing manipulated, and I think Drummond will likely try to use him as a scapegoat. But between Gary and Charlie, I think the truth will come out.  I don't see anything suspicious about Alisha.  She seems straightforward and genuine and unaware of Drummond's shady dealings.  It will be interesting to see how she deals with it all coming out - her speech to Gary was clearly to inform us of her loyalty to Drummond, and that loyalty will be tested for sure.  I think she is an honest cop that will do the right thing.

It does bug me that there's been no mention of Martha and the investigation into the murder of her and her husband at all the past couple of episodes, though I can excuse it this time as finding the kidnapped girl was a frantic priority.   Another thing that bugs me is why Drummond would have told Jack the truth and gotten Lucy away.   I don't' think Jack gives an eff about whether Stan jumped or Mo pushed him.  In fact, knowing how Jack has dealt with pedophiles in the past, I would think he'd cheer Mo on and keep his seret himself.  So why didn't Drummond just keep to the story he told Gary?  Or better yet, why did he suddenly have a concience and tell Mo he would have to bring him in for the death of his brother?  Drummond and Mo could have agreed to get their stories straight and insist it was a suicide.  I would think the entire team would cheer that Stan is dead, and wouldn't have looked too hard into how it happened.  It's like he's unnecessarily complicated it for himself.  And of course tighten the web around himself and Jack.

I guess The bloody body didn't bother me too much because quite frankly I didn't look too closely at it! Lol. But I agree, just would have taken a bit longer for all that blood to seep out.

The double bill is welcome/unwelcome.  On the one hand, the penultimate is probably such a cliffhanger maybe it's better not to wait.  On the other hand, if you make people wait they will keep coming back.  It builds more suspense. You'd think Channel 5 would want to draw it out as long as possible.  I don't like that Channel 5 has always screwed this show around with the scheduling.

I've only just realised where I've seen the actress who plays Lucy before - she was the eldest daughter in the excellent 'Humans' on Channel 4.

This season so far has been less realistic, more polished and higher on the drama.  My boyfriend commented last night that he has really enjoyed this season and thinks that giving the season an arc rather than the single or double episodes has made the show better in his opinion.
