Synopsis

Jack finds a link to Martha’s murder and Gary makes a shocking discovery after an eight-year-old cold case is reopened.

An anonymous tip-off leads the team to the body of Sarah Kramer, a young woman who went missing eight years ago. Drummond appoints Alisha as acting DI to lead the case.

Jack breaks the news to Sarah’s father Joseph. The old man was a suspect in the original case, but Jack finds it hard to believe that he had anything to do with his daughter’s disappearance. However, he finds him a rich source of new information, including the fact that Martha had recently attended his wife’s funeral and had promised to find Sarah.

After some digging back at the station, Jack and Charlie Steele discover that Martha was reinvestigating Sarah’s case at the time of her own murder—are the two cases linked? Then Ed Goddard, the senior investigating officer at the time of Sarah’s disappearance, shows up at the station. The former detective is a renowned alcoholic and Drummond warns Gary not to listen to a word he says. Gary follows his instincts—and what Ed tells him shocks Gary and Jack to the core…

Just 1 day until the double bill Suspects Series 5 finale!

Here's a preview..

SUSPECTS SERIES 5 Double-Bill Finale Preview: How will it all end for ‘The Enemy Within’?

© Channel 5

© Channel 5

Suspects Series 5 concludes on Wednesday, with a double episode finale on Channel 5.

There are just two episodes left of the gripping and intense fifth series of Suspects.

With a new line-up and one epic storyline spreading across a longer season, the latest series has seen the show reach new heights of compelling crime drama. Alongside the central investigation into former boss Martha Bellamy’s murder, we’ve seen masterfully layered cases with cleverly linking subplots. We’ve been introduced to a corrupt new DCI (Jame Murray) with a knack for manipulating evidence and his team. Damien as Jack Weston has been a main focus, with his personal life directly connecting to the cases and affecting his work, inflaming his already passionate approach and creating tension within the team.

As the finale of ‘The Enemy Within’ nears, the big questions remain in this suspense-filled and aptly named series:

Will there be closure, and will justice finally be done, in Martha’s murder investigation?

Will Dodgy Daniel Drummond finally be exposed – and will he do the right thing in the end, or further abuse his power to save his own skin?

Will there be a clear-cut conclusion to the series and the characters’ futures, or will the series end on a cliffhanger?

Last week’s episode saw Jack struggling to sit on the sidelines, as Alisha (Lenora Crichlow) headed up the team’s investigation into the abduction of his daughter Lucy (Lucy Carless). The case led them back to Mo Jones (Neil Stuke) and Stan Turner’s (Sam Stockman) club and to the horrifying discovery that Stan has been abusing Mo’s son. When Mo threw Stan to his death in a multi-storey car park in front of DCI Drummond (James Murray), corrupt Drummond tried to convince Gary (Perry Fitzpatrick), who witnessed the event, that it was suicide. He then manipulated Jack by telling him the truth but that he has to keep the real facts secret in order to protect Lucy, making Jack complicit in the lie. The episode ended with Gary telling Charlie (Clare-Hope Ashitey) that Drummond is lying.

We will have to watch the final episodes to find out the definitive answers to our questions. But, we do know that in the upcoming double-episode finale, not only is the Martha murder case sharply back in focus, but it takes on a surprising new twist. Shocking secrets about Drummond are also revealed and with the team trying to find evidence against him, he responds according to form.

With Jack having been the victim of Drummond’s shady methods throughout the series, there is a strong sense of jeopardy for both characters as the end approaches. The team has been tested by Jack’s drama and the final episodes will reveal if it can come back together or be fractured forever.

But of course, the biggest question of all for us Damien fans is…

Will it all end well for Jack?

We’ll be watching to find out.

I'll be watching!!!

As I'm back at work tomorrow morning I had thought I might just watch ep5 tonight and save the final ep for tomorrow night......but now I realise just how extremely unlikely it is that's going to happen!

'The final showdown'!! - I have faith that Jack/justice will prevail over dodgy Dan......but I confess that I'm still very nervous that DS Jack Weston might not return for another series hmm  We shall see.....

'5 stars Excellent TV' is not adequate to describe the last 2 episodes of this series!

It doesn't begin to describe the 2 solid hours breath holdingingly gripping drama! Stunning! So suspenseful and tense!

Very happy there was closure on Martha's murder and on Drummond...

And Jack was fully exonerated! But do the Channel 5 announcer's words after the end leave a question mark over his future?

To add to my earlier thoughts on this episode...

Jack has not been a team player in this series and it was a huge relief when he and the team began to talk about all the secrets that had been held back.. it was revelation on revelation. This relief was a clever and engaging juxtaposition to the ever-building suspense as the story unfolded. It provided moments of breathing out, alongside holding my breath.

The multi layered secrecy in this series had me worried for Jack, it seemed like he may not be able to come back from the gun incident and being made complicit in the Stan Turner murder cover up, without others behind him (and not Drummond!)

Drummond's manipulation of Jack separated him from everyone else, and that added to his whole "lone wolf" self-isolation. But as soon as he started talking to Charlie and Gary and everything came out into the open, the dynamic shifted towards a possible resolution for him and within the team.

Then when Alisha's secret came out, and when she was attacked (horrible!) there was a shift between her and Jack, where they began supporting each other. Jack was back in the team and they all had one common enemy and worked towards finding enough evidence to nail him.. but that of course is more the events of the finale (ep 6) which I'll save for that discussion, but my strong sense in this episode was the peeling away of the layers in a very textured and rich plotline, not only in the case, but within the team and Jack's reintegration into it.

There were so many gasp out loud moments in the episode! So many unexpected revelations.

I agree totally with domino about the team dynamic. It was great to see them all working together.

Tentatively sneaking on as I saw ep 5 but not ep 6 and I'm trying to avoid spoilers. What a great episode! I love how the team, who worked well all along, just completely clicked here!  YES to everything you said donino!  Now I'm going to get off before I start poking around and read something I shouldn't...

This.  All of this!  This sums up everything I felt about this episode.

I really didn't know whether to believe that Jack could trust Alisha at first.....her revelation came as a total surprise and initially I felt a little bit dubious as to whose side she was really on (especially in the light of her previous 'he's a really good copper' comments to Gary)   The only one who had no secrets at all was Charlie....it was as if they were all circling each other not knowing who to put their trust in.  It was such a relief and so satisfying when they all came clean with each other and began to pull together and it suddenly became apparent how much all of the secrecy had affected their ability to really work as a team.  And what a great team they make!!

I loved the inclusion of the scene on the roof when Charlie told Jack and Gary - in no uncertain terms - to put their accounts of events in writing to cover themselves.  I'm not sure Jack completely deserves the way Charlie always looks out for him!!

I was slightly suspicious as to why they'd decided to air the last two eps as a double bill.....but I noticed on My5 that ep5 is actually 1hr 5mins long while ep6 is only 50mins.  I guess that it'd proved too difficult to do the story justice whilst fitting it into a rigid time slot - ep5 obviously needed to finish with Alisha having just been attacked.  Anyhow I'm kinda glad they did.....it would've been so frustrating to have had to wait another week on that cliffhanger!

A corker of an episode. I'm also in agreement with Domino about Jack and the team during this episode. They were more cohesive as a team and Alisha's revelation was a bit of a double take for me initially but they all worked together and i felt relieved because i was really afraid of Jack being jammed up in Drummond's duplicity. Poor Alisha though. I was so pleased that channel five decided to show both episodes on Wednesday, i could not have waited a week for the finale.
