SUSPECTS | German and Dutch remakes

According to TV Wise, Suspects is being re-made in Germany.

Commissioned by RTL, the new adaptation will feature a local cast and be produced by UFA Serial Drama.

“Suspects is unlike any other drama out there at the moment. I’m a huge fan of the UK original: it combines the realism of documentary filming with great dramatic tension; intense action sequences with compelling storylines”, said  Guido Reinhardt, Executive Producer for UFA Serial Drama, “It’s an extraordinary piece of work and I can’t wait to introduce a local version to German audiences.”

This is cool!  Its one thing to buy a programme 'off the peg'.... but to want to do a local remake shows a real faith in the format.  Although it will obviously be lacking without Damien in it wink (Tho aparently he does speak German? - I wonder if he speaks it well enough to be able to improvise....biggrin)

Suspects has had a Dutch re-make, released in the Netherlands on Videoland in March.

What do we think of the Dutch Jack Weston? (not actually called Jack Weston in the series, but format looks the same!)

biggrin I love that... it really looks the same. But without Damien... hmm

I love it when Dutch people speak. I understand it quite well. In Northern Germany (where i live) there is a dialect which is similar to it.

It seems that the Dutch were faster than the Germans. I found out that in Berlin 10 episodes of Suspects were filmed last year. In 2 months. Quite fast. But it is not yet clear when and where it comes in the German television.

And this is the German Jack:KA_7448-1280x853.jpg

That looks really interesting, Sana. They seem to have kept it pretty authentic. I like the 'new' Jack, too - he seems to be keeping the hair going, at least!

'Suspects' is usually shot very quickly, it normally takes 2-3 days per episode, so two months is pretty standard.

It will be really interesting to hear your comments on the series to contrast and compare. I learned French at school and know only a smattering of Irish, no German.

I understand the Dutch for the safety briefing on a plane and the word for "gate change" because it's impossible to travel through Schipol airport without hearing it several times, even if you're only there for a few minutes! I can read a bit of German but only understand a tiny bit when it's spoken.

I've just got Suspects 1 and 2 on DVD as I've never seen it - I just need to find time to watch it now! It will be interesting to hear from Sana how the German remake compares as she's watched the English version already.

I like how the Dutch Jack seems to be wearing one of his shirts! The German Jack looks like a model! It will be interesting to hear how these versions compare. It does show a real faith in the format which is great.

Thank you for sharing that information on the German remake Sana, really interesting! Do you have a link where you found the info? My searches came up with nothing apart from the announcement of the remake last year.

The trailer for the Dutch Suspects does confirm that they are remaining true to the original format, as they should of course because that IS the show!

Yes Rosie, the whole look with Dutch Jack is really similar - coat, lanyard, shirt - although not exactly the same shirt, there is def a #blueshirtalert going on!

Jack doesn't look amused....

I've asked the TV station RTL, if there is already a date for the broadcast. unfortunately, there is no appointment and no further information.
So that means more waiting.   eyerolleyeroll

Thanks for the link and update Sana!
It is great news for the show creators that Suspects format has been bought by other countries. But I must admit I am more keen for news on the next series of the original UK show!

Suspects creator Paul Marquess has a shiny new website.

Apparently the German version of Suspects series 1 premiered on RTL on 22 March 2018.

The Netherlands Suspects Series 1 premieres April 2018.

It would be good to hear from Molonians in these countries about these new versions of Suspects!

I'm delighted that the format is getting a wider international audience. I've always championed the show as well as Damien in the show. I very much admire the original and brave approach to drama - we have enough of the scripted kind to enjoy. Suspects is an exciting new approach to TV drama. However, it's sad there is no mention of another UK series.

Ha, that's really a coincidence. I just wanted to write here and see that you have also just written here.
I have a funny story about it.
I had some time ago looked up when and where the new series is now running, but have found nothing. I had already forgotten that.
Yesterday I watched TV with my husband, but I fell asleep. I only woke up because something was happening on TV that seemed so familiar to me. And indeed, the German remake of suspects was running. The scenes in the interrogation room were so similar that I woke up to it. Of course I was all wide awake and was very excited.
Now I can say that the whole thing is very similar to the original one. However, I was a little disappointed when I quickly realized that it was not a new story but the same story as in Season 1.03. I did not expect that. Now I can only measure this series on the original. The whole thing somehow lacked the dynamics and the power. The actors were unfortunately a bit boring. It would be different if there were new cases and stories. Well, I'll wait for the next week.
But I have to keep thinking of Being Human's remake all the time. If they told the same story, they had been able to show the original.
"Tatverdacht-Team Frankfurt ermittelt" is the name of the series in Germany now.

What a coincidence Sana!
Thank you for your insight, really special as you have watched the original and the german remake. It is interesting to hear it is based on the same storyline, what is interesting about that though is as it is improvised based on a plot description, do the german actors take it in another direction? Or, do they have the advantage of having seen the original and in that sense almost have a script to follow? I totally agree, if the cases are not different why not just air the original.

What is the exact translation for "Tatverdacht-Team Frankfurt ermittelt"? I can make out 'suspicion' and 'Frankfurt'.

I noticed on the RTL facebook page they are calling it 'Suspicion' not Suspects and UFA Serial Drama are making quite a thing of it on their facebook!

As mentioned in my last post, I am really happy for the show and creators, and hope it does really well. But my own personal interest ends there. And, I would prefer the creators to continue with the UK series, especially as the show was gaining a growing fan base and the momentum was growing.

I had only seen the last 10 minutes. and there the story was exactly the same. Even the last name of the policeman who beat his wife was taken over (Ackermann). I can say more if I saw the next episode.

I have now seen 1 ½ episodes and can say that the series are almost identical. But the German Jack is not a bit sassy, or a maverick. Just a bit boring. And although the acting performance was good (they're all theather actors with TV experience), the spark did not jump. From what I saw, there was no personal touch of the 3 main characters. At the beginning this is with Suspects too, but sometimes one or the other has made a funny remark. Only later did you learn something more personal about Jack.

On this website all episodes are described and there you can see that all the episodes have no new cases. I wonder if the actors have seen the original. Is it still fun to shoot something like that?

https://www.fernsehserien.de/tatverdacht-team-frankfurt-ermittelt/folgen/1x01-vermisst-1183053

As far as I could see, only in episode 2 was the surname Ackermann the same.

Now I have just read that the series was stopped after 3 episodes prematurely. The audience numbers were too low. I'm not surprised, it was too boring. I have to say, taking on the idea is one thing. But somehow only copy the original series, but then not even very good, is another thing. I will certainly not miss the other episodes.

Thanks for the update Sana, you are our German reporter! highfive

I am sorry to hear the show was cancelled after 3 episodes. It does sound as if the remake struggled to connect with the audience.

Had they  stuck with the original Jack....
