Scenes 52, 53, 55, 56, 57, 58 Jack and Martha interview Fiona, who gives a false confession. They then persuade mother Rachel to help them to get Toby to talk as they suspect he was responsible fof Hope's death. Toby confesses and talks about the abuse of his father. Jack arrests Laurie for ABH. (15 mins chat)

Scene 52: 35.23-35.40

Charlie, Martha and Jack are in the main office. Charlie tells them the body is with the coroner, the box and blanket with forensics and she will take Rachel and Laurie to identify the child.  Martha and Jack will go  and interview "grandma".

Scene 53: 35.41-48.42

Fiona tells Jack and Martha she let herself in and Toby was asleep, she staged the break in.  She wanted to save Hope from Laurie and put her in a blanket, and into the boot of her car to sleep but must have covered her up too tightly and it was an accident. she becomes very upset, and jack suggests a glass of water, so he and Martha can talk outside. Neither believe her story. Charlie tells them forensics show synthetic fibres were in Hopes mouth. jack reminds them Toby had said something had happened to Hope.

Scene 55: 38.48-39.40

Scene 56:  39.41-42.00

Martha and Jack are in the interview room with Rachel and Toby. Martha says she thinks she knows what happened and that Grandma is looking out for somebody. Toby tells them that his Gran came round and his dad got angry and he became scared that he would do the same to Hope as he does to him, so he tried to protect her by hiding her. When she started to cry he put the covers over her face. He smashed the window to make it look like someone had broken in. He took Hope to the park. Jack is silent but looks visibly upset

So in the final scenes, we have a false confession from Fiona (grandma) and a real confession from Toby. and Jack finally gets to arrest Laurie... albeit not for the original crime.

This is the only part that really affected me.

These were the difficult scenes.  All the emotion with the mom and grandma.  Devastating to learn that your child died, but even more so that your other child was inadvertently responsible.  And can just imagine Toby's guilt.  He's already an abused child, this will scar him forever.

Jack's emotions show through in all of Damien's expressions.  Especially in the end playing the interview for Laurie.  I felt his frustration on such a senseless, unnecessary death (not sure I'm using the right words there).  Laurie did not kill his daughter, but her death is still partially his fault.   There was a slight satisfaction that he could at least arrest Laurie for the child abuse.

I kind of knew it was Toby all along and that it was an accident.  It still upset me though.

Jack and Martha are on to Fiona immediately. Jack is quite sedate in her interview.

Jack is vey quiet in Toby's interview, and he becomes visibly tearful when Toby talks about his father abusing him and protecting his sister.

He is also contained when showing Laurie the video footage of Toby's confession, but when he reads him his rights, in the final scene in the episode he does so with such nuance it is deeply moving.

(finding it hard to type this.. get teary thinking about it)

yes, well put whimsy, Jack was showing Laurie he was tangentially if not directly responsible for not only the abuse of his son, but the tragic death of his daughter too.. and the ruin of his sons life.

It's kind of ironic that Laurie is so upset about the "child killer" on his street and it turns out Toby is also a "child killer."

Jack was seeing through all his protestations and rants about that though Jane, he was on to Laurie very early on, he was on his radar.

It strikes me that by the end of this episode, we have learnt Jack is really quite a complex character

It was so nice to see Damien in the lead of an episode again.

I like that suspects are rarely completely innocent or completely guilty in this show.  It's very nuanced.

when we first heard Jack character profile "Jack’s easy charm belies his killer instinct." " A man of action as well as acute emotional intelligence" I thought those traits would be obvious and clearly defined, but pleasingly they are not so much, there are blurred lines and conflictions.. and those are the kind of characters Damien has proven himself to be brilliant at playing.

Life isn't black and white.  I like that with this show both the suspects and the detectives (well at least Jack is) are shown to have many layers.  I always feel there are great performances all around (with the exception of Martha at times though)

Agreed Whimsy & Domino.  Martha is improving though.

I like that Damien is in a lead role where he gets to have so much input on his character.  And he most definitely seems the lead figure, despite not being "the boss".

I agree, domino. Damien plays those characters absolutely amazing. And in my opinion, this sort of characters are most interesting.

she is Jane.  definitely the weak link of the three, but improving.  Both Clare-Hope and Damien have proved good matches for the improv style.  This episode there were a few times you could see them "thinking", but in consecutive episodes their dialog flows intuitively.
