agree on how he treated Laurie. He didn't like the guy, but tried to sympathize because still the loss of a child (or any loved one, but really worse a child) isn't something you'd wish on even a hardened criminal. he was a bad, abusive father, but still a father. I like how awkward Damien made it look. Conflicted is a good describer.

Scene 51 first roof top scene, Jack asks Charlie for a cigarette

Jack and Charlie are on the roof, night time London skyline behind them. He asks Charlie for a cigarette, she replies he doesn't smoke anymore, but he insists. Martha joins them and asks how they are doing. She suggests they interview Fiona tomorrow and they go home and come back tomorrow with a fresh head. (10 mins chat)
so this is the first of the rooftop scenes and a real treasure of a moment... we don't have any backstory context or personal lives for the characters, but here we see some expression of their true feelings, we are given an insight into how Jack has been effected by the case, so much so that he has a cigarette when he has given up smoking
First insight into Jack as a person, his former smoking habit.
Not gonna lie, I was afraid they would have him take up smoking again. Thank goodness he hasn't shown that tendency...
As an aside, I had a bit of an "oh!" moment yesterday looking at some tumblr pics and gifs of Jack. In regards to his pen. He uses his pen alot, and puts it to his mouth. Subconscious telltale sign of his former habit I think.

It's nice to see them interacting "off the clock." I hope we get more of that in the future so we can get a little more about their personal lives, without actually seeing their personal lives.

not just an insight into a habit, but that he was personally effected by this case.. he is not all sass and badass, behind that simmering emotion is a heart... so the motivation for the reactions he has is a heartfelt one (not sure I am putting this well...)

also agree HLH. that they've known each other for a while. Both are pretty young to be detectives, and he obviously mentors Charlie (well it's obvious to me in the second episode), so I wonder how long exactly they've been a team.
